Benelli MR1 severe fouling from ARGO system

Brand new gun. The barrel retaining spring nut and handgaurd nut were tight. I shot it twice about 100 rounds total and both times my left hand that holds the handgaurd were filthy black with carbon. I took the handgaurd off and the whole ARGO system is covered in soot. Its disgusting. I am shooting white box 95 Norinco 5.56 bulk ammo. I know it is a bit dirty but this is redonkulous.
 
I will try shooting some .223. I see the manual states to shoot ammo designated by the stamping on the barrel which is .223. Although I read Benelli stated that these rifles are fine shooting .556. I just took it apart again and everything is in place. The piston parts all have very loose tolerances. Maybe the cold weather is shrinking the parts, i know it shrinks my bits to emabarassing levels.

5.56 is your problem. I shoot .223 hunting ammo outa mine and never had that issue.
 
My MR1 seems to like my 223 handloads as well as store-bought 223. The owners manual states to use only 223, not 5.56. I have seen some write-ups claiming that 5.56 are fine to shoot, but I prefer to be safe. From your experience, it appears the manual is correct.
 
I shoot 5.56 exclusively from mine, and have never had any stains on my support hand from holding the handguard. That's very weird. The piston and connecting rods will work perfectly fine when dirty, I haven't fouled mine enough to cause a stoppage yet.
 
I was just back out and shot 40 rounds of .223 and within the first 5 rounds my hand was turning black. By the time I was done my hand looked as bad as shooting the 5.56. There's something wrong with the gun.
 
I mean no disrespect but if the rifle is functioning fine what makes you think there is something wrong with it other than it gets dirty quickly? A lot of piston guns vent excess gas underneath the hand guards so unless there is performance problems with the rifle I’d say you might just have to bite the bullet and wear gloves while shooting it.
 
A google search reveals that the ARGO system in the mr1 is very dirty compared to other designs. My Benelli m4 deposits carbon quite a bit on and around the hand guard.
 
I had an MR1, shot both .223 and 5.56, never had an issue like you're describing. I would look up some assembly/disassembly videos on YouTube and make sure you have all of the parts you need, and that they're oriented correctly. From what I can remember, there's some o rings and stuff in the gas system that could be missing or backwards?
 
One strange thing is the manual shows 2 o rings at the top near the spring nut. Mine only has 1 groove and 1 o ring. From what I can see is everything else is there and in place. It has had zero other issues. No FTF or FTE and shoots as fast as I can pull the trigger.

CIP considers .223 and 5.56 to be the same cartridge so shooting 5.56 from it is a non-issue. The problem is dirty/cheap Chinese ammo.
