Anyone have any range time with either firearm. Looking to buy a new rifle in 30-06. stuck between Browning BAR Or the Benelli R1

Ya, you could ask a mod to move it to hunting/sporting rifles.

I've never owned a benelli, but have owned 6 or 7 Bar. Mine were all Safari mk1. Still have two, a 338wm and 243.

I'm going to say if your more of a traditionalist person for rifle looks, the Bar is traditional/fuddy, and the Benelli is more " modern sporting " look. Safe to say a Bar will be at least a lb heavier.

All of my Bars have shot were at least MOA, a couple much better. Function is perfect, the quirk being the clip on, removable magazine. Just different, easy to get accustomed to, or annoying.

The 1st Gen Bars come in a lot of common calibers. By far the most common, is the 3006. Prices used to be 600-800 for standard, 800-1000 for Magnums. That's field grade, higher grades could be pricey. Since covid, I've seen stupid prices, 12-1500 std, 1800+ magnum.

Not ammo fussy. If you reload, try the faster of the recommended powders.

Have had both - BAR in 30-06 and 2 R1s - an e pro in 308 and battue in 308. I prefer the R1. Easier to disassemble / clean, I prefer the magazine without the hinge plate. I think lighter as well. Both are great guns.

Got them both browning for me has the edge for accuracy…I like both but not overly happy about benelli mag set up …if it not perfectly lined up it will fall out from recoil…has happened to me …so it gets a hard whack …..both a superb rifles that’s why I bought both

I had both and unloaded the Benelli. The Benelli was nice as I wanted a DM and it was super easy to disassemble including barrel removal without tools but I found it clunky and it just didn’t fit me right.

The BAR is a new Mk3 and it’s a beautiful rifle and accurate as well but it has an external mag that has to be clicked onto the hinged floor plate and then swung up and into the rifle. That part, I don’t care for.

Oh Yeah!!

I have 2 Benelli R1's. .308 with wood stock and a 300 WSM with synthetic. They are great guns. Shoot well, and very easy to disassemble. Although I like the look of the wooden stock, I prefer to carry the synthetic. Had a BAR many years ago. Worked well, but a bit heavier to carry than the Benelli. I would take the Benelli over the BAR as a hunting gun.

I too was wrestling between a BAR and R1, but ultimately decided to go with the Benelli for a few reasons. The adjustability of the comb using the different shims to make the gun fit me better, it is a bit lighter than the BAR, it has the option for iron sights, and the magazine is better than the BAR (IMO). It is also a lot easier to disassemble and clean as well.

So, I have a Benelli argo E/R1 Pro in 30-06. Wood stock, iron sights. I mounted a Leopold VX3 1.5-5 and so far I like it. Wouldn’t say I love it, but I like it so far. I have only shot about 50 rounds through it at the range, and I haven’t taken it out hunting yet as i only bought it this past spring. Most of my shots will be 150 yards or less, with the majority being close quarters as I hunt in a heavily forested/swampy bush. If you’re looking to shoot longer range than that, get a bolt action, but I’m sure you already know that.

Pros: Shoots fairly accurate for a semi, im not an expert shooter by any means but I was getting about 1.75 moa at 100 yards with 180 grain Federal premium trophy bonded tip. I like the option for a ten round magazine. It carries nice and balanced. I do a lot of walking, rather than sitting so it’s great in the regard. It is light. There is not much recoil. Feeds and ejects round cleanly, no issues there. As mentioned, very easy to maintain, disassembly and reassembly quick and easy, and no tools required. Target acquisition with my chosen optic is very quick.

Cons: it gets hot fast, I guess because of how thin/light the barrel is. This isn’t a problem when you are hunting, but more so for range shooting and zeroing your optics. Price of the extra magazine was $100 or so, so pretty expensive. It also likes the expensive ammo, and it didn’t group great with the cheaper, more readily available Remington core lokt or Winchester super x.

Maybe one day I’ll buy a BAR too, but I am happy with my purchase.

I had an ARGO Carbine in 06 when they first came out. Only thing you had to make sure was that the forend screw was tight. Takedown for cleaning was a breeze and it never ever skipped a beat. Optic was a Leupold VX3, 2.5x8 and it was only fed Federal 165gr Fusion's. I killed more than a few truckloads of deer with it. Great rifles and top notch build quality as would be expected from Benelli.

Owned 5 Browning Bars. Shot a Benelli once.
Own 1 Browning Bar in 270 now. Down sizing the collection.
.21 to .27 3 shot group of the 5 bars says it all.

If you’re thinking about a browning bar you better act fast as the company stopped making them …what ever is in Canada …that’s it that’s all ….been thinking about a 270 …but life and bills and a mortgage…for ffff sakes
