I too was wrestling between a BAR and R1, but ultimately decided to go with the Benelli for a few reasons. The adjustability of the comb using the different shims to make the gun fit me better, it is a bit lighter than the BAR, it has the option for iron sights, and the magazine is better than the BAR (IMO). It is also a lot easier to disassemble and clean as well.
So, I have a Benelli argo E/R1 Pro in 30-06. Wood stock, iron sights. I mounted a Leopold VX3 1.5-5 and so far I like it. Wouldn’t say I love it, but I like it so far. I have only shot about 50 rounds through it at the range, and I haven’t taken it out hunting yet as i only bought it this past spring. Most of my shots will be 150 yards or less, with the majority being close quarters as I hunt in a heavily forested/swampy bush. If you’re looking to shoot longer range than that, get a bolt action, but I’m sure you already know that.
Pros: Shoots fairly accurate for a semi, im not an expert shooter by any means but I was getting about 1.75 moa at 100 yards with 180 grain Federal premium trophy bonded tip. I like the option for a ten round magazine. It carries nice and balanced. I do a lot of walking, rather than sitting so it’s great in the regard. It is light. There is not much recoil. Feeds and ejects round cleanly, no issues there. As mentioned, very easy to maintain, disassembly and reassembly quick and easy, and no tools required. Target acquisition with my chosen optic is very quick.
Cons: it gets hot fast, I guess because of how thin/light the barrel is. This isn’t a problem when you are hunting, but more so for range shooting and zeroing your optics. Price of the extra magazine was $100 or so, so pretty expensive. It also likes the expensive ammo, and it didn’t group great with the cheaper, more readily available Remington core lokt or Winchester super x.
Maybe one day I’ll buy a BAR too, but I am happy with my purchase.
