Hello Shotgunners :).

First time wading into your part of the forum. I do not yet have a shotgun, but have been looking at getting one for myself for a good time now. I am looking for a proper shotgun, which will be almost unbelievably reliable, good for huniting as well as shooting clays.

I have had the opportunity to shoot my friend's Benelli Super Black Eagle 2 and really liked the look and feel of the shotgun. Shooting it was also very fun and I believe the Italians are quite well known for their shotguns. However the price is a bit of a concern (I believe around 1600). My question really is can the Super black Eagle 2 be a multi purpose shotgun. From various hunting as well as clay shooting.

My other option I have considered is a Remington 870 wingmaster. Now I am usually a tactical and black rifle kind of guy, but when I saw this shotgun I was astonished at how beautiful it was. I have heard that the 870's are highly customize able as well as very reliable shotguns. However I have also heard that their quality has gone down in the past. I am not sure if that has been improved recently or not? I have not had the experience yet to shoot the wingmaster, but have shot the express and thought it was pretty good. Not as good as the Benelli, but thats where the $1000 difference is.

If you guys could share any insight that would be most appreciated.
 
I have an SBE II which I have owned for about 6 years now and absolutely love it, it is very reliable and shoots well for me. The wingmaster is a great gun as well especially older iterations of it as Remington's quality has slid over the years, if you can find an older one (someone else may be able to reference a good year for these) it may be worth picking up...hard to go wrong with either in my view.

The most important thing to do is to go pick one of each up back to back if you can and compare which one feels better to you, gun fit is a big factor in the shotgun world and this is very much an individual case by case thing.

The Benelli for me does everything well, it's not a dedicated skeet or trap gun but is an excellent all around compromise as an all around shotgun. It's targeted and marketed as a hunting shotgun but does all things well enough that I haven't "needed" another gun since owning it....though I have "wanted" a few ;-)
 
I really don't think there's a drop in quality in the Wingmaster. Maybe in Remington's cheaper 870's like the Express, SPS, Tactical etc that I would worry about. IMO a 3" Wingmaster with a 28" barrel is all you need for ducks and geese. Been using them for years and never had the need for a 3 1/2" Super Magnum. That being said, I rarely shoot 3" magnum shells out of mine.

Both my hunting buddies use sbeIIs and love them,they have the wood stocked model and each has nice looking wood with one being exceptional. Both guns are used for hunting and informal clay shooting and handle the wally world specials. They have a nice weight and function flawlessly in the field.
 
Thanks guys :). Looks like either would be a great pickup. Now is the question if I want to splurge on the ~1000 dollar different Benelli.
 
I'm a huge Wingmaster and 870 fan and will always have at least 1 in my safe, but there is something about those wood stocked SBE's that really tempts me.

I always recommend a pump to folks new to shotguns particularly for hunting, I look at it like learning to drive a car, if you learn to run a pump (standard) it will make you better when running an automatic. I also noticed a lot of shooters rely on the quick second shot of semi's and with pumps they learn quicker to make the first shot count.
 
isn't the SBE II semi vs the Wingmaster pump?

if you're looking for a comparison then it would be a Benelli SuperNova or even a Nova vs a Wingmaster

If you wanted to compare a Remington to a SBE II then it would most likely be an 1100 or even a VersaMax
