Beretta 391 - Trap or Parallel Target?

I usually use an O/U for trap, but tried a round with a Beretta 391 for the first time today. Namely, my synthetic field model with 28" barrel. It felt so great that I now MUST own a sporting version of this gun ;) .

I shoot mostly trap, and a little skeet. I don't want to buy separate guns for each discipline, so I'm thinking of getting one 391 with a 28" Optima bored barrel for both.

What is the difference between the Trap and Parallel Trap models? The former is obviously set up for trap shooting, but the PT looks very similar. Is the PT a more versatile gun that would serve me well in both trap & skeet?

The only difference is the configuration of the stock. The trap gun comb slopes down while the parallel target doesn't. Both guns have a stepped rib and are otherwise identical. The only other issue is that the trap gun doesn't come in a 28" barrel according to the Beretta website.

Some shooters swear by the parallel combs others swear at them. Put both types into your hands and see which one feels best to you. Although I would think a PT would be better for shooting multiple games.
 
I also prefer the 28" PT, (over the Sporter) but the choice is very much a personal one. The PT's seem to have a slightly different radius on the pistol grip, making them more to my liking. Too bad they don't have a palm swell as well ! A very shootable gun at Skeet, Sporting & 5 Stand !!!

Beretta Boy, how is the grip radius different? Is it tighter; more vertical; slimmer; etc.?

Is the PT also a good trap gun?
 
My son shoots a 391 PT RL. The grip on them slightly more radiused. He uses the gun mainly for trap (runs a 97.6 avg. at 16yrds) but also does quite well with it on the skeet field and sporting course. As far as semi's go I think it is one of the better all around guns out there. The stock is also adjustable for height and cast useing the Beretta shim system. If they came left handed I'd have one aswell.

I carry both models in the store and since you are in teh GTA area call and come by the store and see what you think.

Something else that has been taking the market by storm is a Benelli Super Sport. This gun right now is out selling the Beretta llne and being new on the market is one reason and the other is the vertually non existant recoil and fast cycling of the gun. My wife shoots one and she enjoys it. I shot it for trap, skeet and sporting clays and it does perform real well.

Of course I am kind of spoiled and will stay with the DT10.

I test fired a SuperSport and IIRC a member on the board (hr?) has one. I liked it although my semi-auto (currently a 391 Sporting) also does double duty as a waterfowl gun and I didn't care for the shiny receiver.

Is the Benelli Cordoba available in Canada yet? It's the same gun with a dull finish. That gun interests me (but then they ALL interest me).:D
 
I have shot the trap and the parallel target. These are really good, in fact I want to get one for my wife ( DT Sam has a good price IMHO). However, a fella I shoot with just got a Beretta AL 391 Teknys Gold Trap. He had the barrel made stainless and had a Moneymaker adjustable rib put on it. The gun and all the work he had done in the states and then had the gun imported up. This gun fit me like a glove ( nice adjustable comb) the point of impact was perfect and the dam thing felt like it could shoot itself. Now the sad part. When all was said and done the bill came to around $4000. (The barrel made stainless and the rib probably came to around $1500 so I assume $2000 for this model Beretta .....DTSam confirm ??)

If you look on the Moneymaker web site they have one for ( not a Gold model) for $1950. I have no idea what it would take to get it up here but man that is one gun I am going to look at seriously in the not to distant future.

At the last PITA shoot he sold the gun to an older fella ( for how much I don't know ) I asked him why and he said he is getting two more of them sent up....both Gold models!!) I am not sure if he will sell either of them but I am going to look at one soon. Just a thought for you.

I will let you know, I do not have one at the store so I can not really say, but I think they are now available in Canada however I will confirm it tomorrow and let you know either way.

Hi Jacky,

The Beretta Teknys Gold Trap is a very fine gun however, they are not available as of yet for Canada. It seems that Beretta USA has the only rights to it and I am trying like crazy to get that turned around. I raninto the same thing with the DT10 and it took me just over a year to get it into Canada. It seems that the Canadian market is just a drop in the bucket for any gun manufacturer compared to the US, so it does take some time to get things rolling but never to fail on trying. I know that the Teknys Gold Trap is something that I have been asking for the last year and a half and the answer was NO NOT POSSIBLE.

I'm sure that this is still the case at the present itme.

mmmmm that explains why the guy at my club bought it from Moneymaker. I think he bought the gun from them and had them put the stainless barrel and of course the adjustable rib on it. I think he had a broker from Ont. bring it in for him but I am not 100% sure about that. It is a fine gun and I was quite surprised at how well it fit, how well it swings and that recoil did not exist.

There are quite a few guys these days shooting the Beretta 391 at competitions. No recoil and many have the butt stock cut in half
( lengthwise) and then get a recoil reducer and adjustable stock put on it. There is a guy from Kelowna that does all that work and the guns are becoming quite popular.

On your web site you have the sporting gold model ?? Does this mean you can ge that one but no the trap model ??

Hi Jacky,

You are right we can only get the Teknys Gold Sporting in Canada and not the Teknys Trap model. I have been trying to get this model all of last year and the only way I think I can get it is to set something up with a dealer down in the US. I tried Beretta USA and they will not ship to a Canadian Dealer.

The Benelli Cordoba is not available in Canada either. We seem to always get the short end of the deals.

Sorry your thread got "hi-jacked" ....

The PT has a slightly tighter grip radius and a somewhat smaller circumference. Not easy to see, but you can certainly feel it in your hand.
If you've got "big mitts", you may well find it a little
too cramped - thus the Optima Sporting may fit you better.

I would think the PT to be the better Trap gun than the Sporter, but the
PT is certainly capable for Skeet, Sporting & 5 Stand.

Get yourself to a Gunshop or two and try both on for size ... or, better yet, see if you can beg a "few shots" or a round or two from both types of guns from those at your Club who may own them.

Jacky, I found your post really interesting because I am currently having a 391 done by moneymaker. I bought a really nice used sporting clays optima, got a beutiful PT AAA walnut stock out of Cole gunsmithing and the barrel is being fitted as we speak with the adjustable rib and I will have it back together for about $3000 CDN. Someone could do it cheaper if you didnt upgrade the wood too...(I did the comb job myself and save a few bucks too) but the bottom line is that our dollar is strong and the guys at Moneymaker and Cole were great to deal with. I prefer the PT stock over the trap stock.
