Good friend of mine is shopping for a beretta 96 and is pretty set on it. We talked to a fella who said it was better to get the 92 due to the back that the pistol was build around the 9mm round. We were told that the .40 S&W round would eventually wear the pistol out faster. Any second opinions?

You could get a 96A1 if you like the looks. It has a recoil buffer to make the frame last longer but honestly, how many people here are actually wearing out the frame of their pistols? I don't think you will have to worry about it.

It might wear out faster and be more expensive to feed, but it stands out on a firing line filled with 9mm peashooters.

Live fast, die young.

No seriously, the Beretta will probably outlive him anyway. There might be a few more springs to change here and there at some moment, but I would not worry too much about the frame or slide in a casual shooting environment.

It is the locking block that was known to fail in the 40 models in the past.

I think it was made into a bigger issue than it really was, and even if it ever did happen a new locking block is cheap, and can be installed in minutes.

The new A1 uses a recoil buffer to address these concerns.

Personally I think .40 S&W is a useless round for punching paper, but that's just my 2 cents.

Go with the 92 as it was designed around the 9mm round. The aluminum frame of the gun was simply not designed to take a lifetime of pounding from the .40 S&W.

I believe many police forces switched to Glock or Sig from the Beretta 96 for this reason.

Two reasons to get the 92
1)die hard
2)lethal weapon
If its good enough for bruce and mel its good enough for you and me.

I have owned both the 92 and 96 models. You have to decide what you want to do, punch paper or steel as well. I have found that with 10 rds in either pistol I wanted a heavier punch for pepper poppers and plates. The 96 is easy to feed if you reload with lots of 40 brass kicking around right now. I sold my 92 and kept my 96 and am happy with that decision.

Neither Beretta 90TWO is what I grabbed
