I see these are at 3 sponsors that I know of, Weimajack has a nice one, Trade-Ex and Marstar. Just wondering what you guys think of them, the heel release makes it a hard sell at that price as the bottom cutout on modern mags doesn't seem to be there AND the pricing puts it very close to a NEW Girsan 92FS with the modern mag release, w/2 mags. Also, used 92FS pistols are around $600 on the EE with more than one mag.

What do you guys think?

The only thing going for it is somewhat collector appeal....it was the 92S the US military first adopted.
For something to shoot a lot, I would buy a Girsan or M9.

If there was some info on where they came from specifically there might be some more appeal. Some history. Seems lacking though.

I agree. Almost no info from TradeEx or Marstar. You are left to a lot of guessing. That heel release kills it for me too, I already have a 92FS with a ton of mags.

It's not a heel magazine release. A P-38/P-1, Browning 1900, 1910, 1922 are heel magazine release pistols. This Beretta, unlike the Beretta 1934/35, has a button release, it's just not were you are used to seeing it and using it.

So the button heel release then... to differentiate where we normally see it. Perhaps we could call it an ankle release, as it is above and off to the side of the heal.

To settle those clipazine people down before the riot breaks out.

These treads had me realised that i need a 92 in my herd, i finally opted for a brand new FS from another dealer, those look good but in uncertainty go fo the gusto... JP.

actually, one of criteria for the us army trials was the relocation of the magazine button- beginning with the 92sb-f- the 92 was the initial submission, found wanting ,sent back to the drawing board, and the 92s had the safety relocated to the slide - ie the interrupted firing pin- it was then re-submitted and had the button relocated ala 1911 as the board found it too "inconvenient " to re- train all the troops that were previously trained on the 1911- ie" the location of the magazine button in the heel of the frame is clumsy and inconvenient"- if that sounds like the review board it is
remember all these old pistols can have the locking block break at between 5-10k- I've HAD IT HAPPEN- and mines a 92s- granted, it's a simple drop in and if you get a new block of recent manufacture, you will be ok, as the new block has a different dimension and radius than the old one- ie less stress- this can even happen on the old 92sb-fs- look it up and see what happened to the operators-

These are all coming from Trade Ex as the importer/distributor. Marstar and Weimajack are dealing through Trade Ex.

So really when dealing with any of the above it just comes down to price and customer preference.

A note on the mag catch:

Ever wonder what the extra notch at the bottom of your 92FS mags was for?

It's for the 92S.

When Beretta made the changes for the US Military, there were already a bunch of 92S in circulation. Rather than have 2 series of magazines, they just changed the tooling to add an extra notch for the higher mag catch on the 92FS, and left the existing notch in place. That way they didn't have to do separate runs for the different buyers. Been that way ever since.

All Beretta made mags from that point on will work with both guns. Original 92S mags will only have the lower notch, and only work with the 92S.

Mec-Gar mags only have the high notch.

So, if you have a 92FS, and a pile of Beretta made mags for it, then you've got a ready supply of spare mags for your 92S.

Cheers.

I have all MecGar mags, no lower notch.

Good information in this thread. I was curious at first, but I think I'll pass. Not sure I'd be happy with the heel mag release, and the price....well, I've come across a few 92FS models in the $600.

IRG had a pile of 92S surplus a while ago, maybe last year? i think they were going for $395 USD and even at that price with a not-so-$hitty exchange rate, there was a bit if pushback from the community about the price.
