I'm considering buying a Beretta 96D and no one I know has one. I'd appreciate any thoughts from current or past owners about functionality, reliability, usefulness etc. I would be using it for IPSC and IDPA. Thanks.

96D = double action only, 40S&W caliber.

They are a decent pistol, but they have a long, heavy trigger pull. The trigger weight can be addressed with a lighter hammer spring, but only to a degree.

For IDPA or IPSC, an FS or G model would be better suited.

RePete.

Ironically enough, the D Spring is used to lighten the trigger pull of the other 92/96 models. Like RePete said, an FS or G model would be better, and the price is definately right for a 96FS.

it's because they are police trade ins and they are cheap cheap cheap. Decent guns but I wouldn't buy one honestly. I'd go with a nice DA/SA as mentioned above.
