Beretta A400 vs Browning Maxus Sporting what length barrel?

I have no experience with Maxus other than handling them but I bought an A 400 sporting a year or two ago. Unfortunately I haven't used it near as much as I hoped but on the hunting and skeet trips I have taken it on it has not had a hiccup. It is shockingly light and I sure wouldn't want to hit the thin front stock on anything! It seems to be a nice gun and fit and finish are nice. Recoil is very soft and I don't have the kick off stock. Mine only takes 3" shells and that's fine as I don't do any waterfowl hunting (yet)

Nice gun. Is that the A400 Xplor Action? (And you will be more than fine to hunt waterfowl with it using 2 3/4" or 3" shells. )

And just to give you a heads up not all maxus guns have the same butt stock and the hunting guns will fit differently from the sporting guns

Just a heads up but all Maxus guns have the exact same stock dimensions 14 1/4 " length of pull 1 3/4" drop at comb and 2" at the heel . granted the wood stocks will vary in thickness do to wood density . to attain a gun weight somewhere close to advertised .

I don't have any experience with the Browning in question. I do have an A400 Xtreme Unico that is absolutely fantastic. I have no regrets about my choice. Not sure how much they helps if any.

Thanks again,
Cal.

Everything Beretta has put out since the 391 seems to be reliable and soft shooters but they handle like canoe paddles and are often times very ugly. If not the "laser etched" wood to the blue receivers, to the other funky colours and/or designs I just can't warn up to them. The A400s I've handled just felt bulky and dead in my hands. The Maxus is ok and does fit me much better, I just don't particularly care for it's styling either. At least the A400 is a continuation in the evolution of the 391 and has a strong pedigree. The Maxus was redesigned from the ground up and while not a new gun wouldn't give me the same confidence as the Beretta.

And don't even get me started on the stupid names that Beretta comes up with for their guns.

Try and find a used 391, much more subdued, refined and a lot less bling bling.

Patrick

I agree the 391 Sporter is a good choice, but he asked about the A400 vs the Maxus.

I will take a 390 Sporter over all of them.

I saw an informal poll on another forum that asked NSCA Masterclass shooters what their personal shotgun preference was. A hundred or so participated. And as far as Auto's go it was Beretta, Beretta and Beretta. All the rest were barely mentioned.

Just mentioning the results of an informal poll. The Browning, Benelli, etc. shooters should not be offended.

I have the Beretta Xplor and absolutely love it for many of the reasons that have already been shared. Definitely more expensive but in my opinion it's a better quality piece. To each his own but I would go with the Xplor

Cant comment on the Maxus sporting but I do own a A400 xcel. I find this a wonderful gun to shoot, soft recoil (kickoff system) and the fit works for me. I do use this gun for backyard clays/skeet, turkey and waterfowl hunting. I have had no issues running any ammo through at all. I went to the A400 as I have a bad right shoulder and my 870 was beating it to death so I now can enjoy anything from skeet, turkey and waterfowl loads with no issue.

+1 for the maxus.
I have the Maxus Sporting Carbon, I bought it as my first autoloader over the a400 just because it seemed to fit and point better
Has cycled everything ive put threw it, and have had no issues on extended shooting sessions shooting clays with the family

Cheers
Doug

Pick the one that fits you best . If at all possible shoot both guns for box of shells you will know which one to buy . They are the flagship model of each company so quality is pretty much at the top .

For me I find my a400 out of the box shoots high also vs the maxus was right where I point it. Some say the maxus is designed that way in the hunter models I'm not sure but nothing a shim adjustment will not alter in either but one should check what they buy and adjust accordingly
Cheers

Can't comment on the Browning, as I have no experience with the Maxus, but I have two Beretta's including an A400. I am and probably will be a Beretta guy for life because of them, definitely two of my favourite guns I have.

Cheers,

30 inch is what I will go with.

That is probably the right decision. A 32" semi is a long piece of equipment, definitely a place of user preference in this regard. Altho they do point incredibly well, many have a hard time adjusting to the balance and swing difference coming from a 28 or 30 inch when out for a full day or weekend of clay games.

When purchasing a semi that shoots 3.5", be aware that the receiver will be that much longer. My 28" A400 is just as long as my 32" Browning 725, and they both swing beautifully.

Thanks,
Cal.

I have an a400 with the 32" barrel and can tell you that it has a nice swing to it while breaking clays. It just felt better swinging than the 30". But that's just my opinion. Over 5000 rounds and not a hiccup.
