I have an opportunity to pick up a new AL391 URIKA OPTIMA HARDWOODS HD for $1000 and am wondering if it is a good deal (or should I pick something else). I do not need the gun to shoot 3 1/2" ammo.I will be using it for duck/geese and skeet.

Thanks!

The Urika's are a great gun. I have a Hardwoods camo version AL391 I bought last year. I think I paid 1400 + tax or so. I also have a wood/blued 20ga AL391 that I use for upland hunting. I like the guns and never had a minutes trouble with them. Sounds like a pretty good price.

Better still, buy a new one from Epps for $999.00

NON-RESTRICTED BERETTA AL391 URIKA OPTIMA HARDWOODS HD SEMI-AUTO 12GA X 3" 24" VR BBL, OPTIMA CHOKES (5), REALTREE HARDWOODS HD CAMO FINISH, SYNTHETIC STOCK WITH SHIM KIT, RECOIL PAD, HARD CASE $999

Are you referring to the shell carrier problem? Has Beretta finally dealt with this with the new Urika II line?

That was what I was referring to. I have a Urika and a Urika 2 and have never had that problem with either but I did buy a Tek that had the probelm and that is why it was for sale. I have seen a few more. I am not sure if beretta addressed as there are other difference in the u2? I am always on guard for a used 391 and always insist on trying it.

beretta still has not admitted that there is even a problem with the 391 carriers... go to the shotgunworld site, scroll down to the beretta forum, and read about it until your heart's content. Oh, and if you own a 390 or 391, a member there named Seamus put together a teardown manual that's to die for!! I have an extra copy here, if anyone wants to buy it, let me know.

How are you able to find out if the carrier is going to cause trouble?

Don't buy trouble ahead of time. Most 391s work fine. Most of the trouble seems it is there from the get go. Sometimes it developes after. The signs are that a round from the mag will be lifted up and catch on the right side of the carrier. Most of the guns this happens in the carrier is warped. Not able to tell unless the carrier is removed. A new carrier in most cases fixes the problem. If ordering a carrier as a part for the 391, get one for the 390. The 390 carrier is designed not to warp as easy. The manual mentioned is a good one. Written by a guy that has been down the road and speaks our language.:D
