I have a Beretta 92A1 and I've heard that if you change out the factory plastic guide rod for a steel one you will improve the cycling. Anybody have any experience with this?
I'm sure they did it to save money rather than to make the gun more reliable. What they say is that the slots on the guide rod would work better if dirt gets inside the gun.
Their plastic for a reason! They reduce bending and hold oil better i have a 92fs and my dad has. 92f andi have around 5k rounds and he has closer to 15k and not one failure
So im keeping mine
I was wondering the same thing about the plastic guide rod, thanks alot for the info guys. I think ill just leave the plastic one in there and find something else to spend my money on.
why does a guide rod have to be lubed? it just holds the spring in line with the slide,,im anti plastic,,lets see what that rod will look like in 100 years. (my worthless 2cents)

You can't use the standard 92/96 guide rod in the A1 series of Beretta pistols, without a small modification. They use the same guide rod set-up as the 90-TWO, not the 92/96FS. You have to use the recoil spring guide rod washer from the 92A1 guide rod, and use it together with the 92/96 steel guide rod if you wish to upgrade. The reason for this is because the actual opening at the front of the slide where the guide rod protrudes from, is actually larger on the 92A1 (just like the 90-TWO) than the standard 92FS. This causes proper fitting issues, and will not allow a 92/96 guide rod to work properly in the A1. If modfied, though, it will work. Basically, you're replicating the stock A1 plastic guide rod with a steel one...but it will not be captive like the original.
I did this mod to one of mine and it works perfectly...
