Can anyone offer any insight to the subtle differences between a Beretta M9 and the 92FS? Also, I hear some references to difference in the slides of some of these pistols; I'd like to know what are they and if they pose any implications for reliability and handling?

Thanks! Neil

The two pistols are almost identical. The only difference I can see is the frame under the slide on the M9 is straight and the 92 is slighly angled. These guns are accurate and very reliable. My M9 eats everything and never hiccups. If it fits your hand and you like the way it handles, get one, you won't be disappointed.

Theres no reliability and handling difference.

The M9 can (but not always) be found with dot/post sights (two dots) verses 3 dot sights (three obviously). 3 is what you see on almost all handguns. dot/post is more of a military config which some people claim is better for faster target acquisition. My opinion is dot/post is superior.

There MAY (not totally sure) be very minor grip differences between the two.

Overall though they are basically identical. The M9A1 is different from the two in the fact that it has an integrated rail (the frame shape is slightly different) and has really aggressive grip checkering which is awesome.

Oh, if you find an M9 it is likely it will come in a crappy cardboard box with two mags and a cable lock, meaning, unless you have a safe you'll still need to get an opaque lockable container to hold it since the box it came in is crap.

M9 is made primary for the army and has overall manufacture tolerances larger then commercial 92 models
M9 has bigger tolerances to be able to deal with sand, mud and dirt in war fields.

^ yeah, but they wouldn't advertise the tolerances, cuz that would imply that one is made better than the other, or that one is more reliable than the others. i'm thinking there's more than just the markings, and much of it could be proprietary info that you'd either have to spy out or guess at based on hands-on experience with a few samples of each.

And even that seems hokey as my M9A1 has pretty much the same idiot markings as the 92fs (I've seen M9's without the markings though...mine's pretty new). It seems to come down to rail or no rail and inox. If you don't want the rail get a 92fs and save lots of money...

I have no proof, but I very seriously doubt that Beretta re-tooled to make the M9 tolerances different from the 92fs, to the matter of a few /100ths of an inch.

Fr that matter.. the serial numbers for the real, American armed forces M9s dont read "M943768" (just an example) but rather just have numbers. In other words, the "M9" part is for the civilian sold models. Make sense? Yeah.. me neither. I can find a site for this info...

I have an M9A1 and I love it. All metal guns are the best and the design of that handgun is freaking TOP notch, looks awesome, feels great. Downside....expensive. I paid something like $920 bucks, but you can get an M9 for around $900 and a 92fs for maybe even as low as $700 if you find a blazing deal.
