Beretta shoots low... and to the right *UPDATE - suck less*

Beretta's are definitely tricky. I think it's because the trigger is bowed quite a bit so while you're pulling the trigger it kind of forces itself off centre. It is very sensitive to where you put your finger on it. I found both of mine shot 'wierd' until I got the hang of it and really focused on my trigger finger. It definitely doesn't shoot like my 1911. However, now that I've got it I can tack drive the crap out of it.

If it shoots right, move the sight left. I use a pencil or a dab of white out to mark the sight so I can see how much I moved it.

If it shoots low, buy a lower rear sight or an adjustable sight.

Most of the new guns I buy shoot low, so I use that as an opportunity to buy a taller and narrower fibre optic front sight. I don't think that is an option o your pistol.

Either of those suggestions would make it shoot even lower, if it shoots low you would need a taller rear sight or a shorter front sight.

Okay! Got to the range.

Here are a few shots of the targets. Now, I'm not a great shot... but I think the evidence is here.

Beretta targets:

Walther Targets:

I believe there are five shots here.

What is interesting is the Walther shots are tending to land a little left.

I did some quick steel shooting afterwards with great success with the Walther, and several misses with the Beretta. I think I flinch a bit when I focus, maybe not at all shooting quickly at steel. Just a theory.

I think you might be onto something there

All my Berettas have shot low, they are point of aim to begin with and the heavier 147's make them even lower. I put LPA adjustable rear sights on them. Got them from Brownells and Fusion Firearms.

I am thinking I may have to go this route. Which is kind of annoying! I want my 92 to look just like Mr. McClaine's! :)

Seeing is believing. For whatever reason, your FS definitely shoots low and right. The trigger pull for you may or may not have something to do with it but that doesn't matter.
Seeing as you are grouping reasonably ok with the 92 and pretty good with the Q, you'll probably have to change the sights on the Beretta for your style of shooting. Don't discard the current sight. It may work for the next owner ( if there is one!)

I had hoped not to sell this one! My firearms related New Years resolution is to not sell any more guns to buy new guns... and to only buy powder and primers all year :) There is something about the Beretta that is so likeable. I actually just installed a Wilson Combat Guide Rod, Wilson Combat short reach trigger, and a Wolff Trigger Spring conversion kit. My brother gave me some cash for Christmas and I spent it on Beretta upgrades... wishing I had bought a rear sight with that cash, but who knew!?

I guess I should zip back to the range and see if these modifications made any difference. If they did, then it is definitely me having trigger issues. If not, I definitely need an adjustable rear sight.

I am one of those lucky shooters with a range 5 minutes down the road. Hit the tripometer, and from my door to the shooting bench is 4.2k... Coming from Vancouver, I truly appreciate it:

So here are some more results. Other than a couple promising groups, it is still low and right... which I figured would be the case. But had to double check after installing new mods.

Just for fun have you tried shooting with gloves?

I mean as a righty, the different trigger pull could be exaggerating minor bad habits?

I know walther triggers are pretty darn nice and not as long a pull as the beretta.

And obligatory picture of my 92F ;)

Are you aiming at the bottom, for a 6 o'clock hold? If so, the elevation is about perfect.

Drift the rear sight to the left about 4mm and it will hit the bottom of the disk. In other words, it will shoot point of aim.

Oops! I think you already asked that, and I failed to answer!

I am covering the bullseye with the front sight, so she is shooting low. I wish it weren't so!

Ooooo nice grips!

I have not tried gloves... ever actually. Maybe I'll give it a go.

There is a good chance that I have bad habits. I shoot a lot, but have never had any training.

You mentioned you may have a flinch. Have you tried the flinch test?
Do you have dummy rounds? If you do, load random dummy rounds along with regular ammo into your mags. Don't count or cheat by remembering how many or where you load them.
Start shooting the way you have been concentrating on sight picture and the 2" dot. If you notice the sights go down and right on a dummy, you know you're flinching and " pulling" the trigger towards you. Hence shots going right and low.
The good news is, by your target groups, even if you have a flinch, it's a small one. Keep working on dry fire and keeping the sights steady when you're at home.
The Q shoots more left and I've noticed this on striker fired guns. For some reason, when one squeezes a striker fired trigger, one tends to " push" it, hence shots going left.

Pull straight back with your support hand and push straight forward with your dominant hand as opposed to squeezing with your dominant hand and fingers.

Sometimes I catch myself flinching on an empty chamber when I accidentally ride the slide stop on my PPQ... I do have dummy rounds. And I have been doing a bit more dry fire practice at home. The thing is, is that on no other pistol am I having accuracy issues like this.

Every time I go shooting I try and imagine that I am just dry firing the pistol.
