Beretta vs Remington semi autos

I've owned both types and the Beretta 391 is more reliable than the 1100. It will handle a wider range of shells from ultra-light target loads up to 3" magnums. It will go far longer between cleanings than the 1100 provided it is kept lubricated.
The Beretta gas handling system is a little more complex than the Remington but needs to be cleaned less frequently. The Remington depends on a rubber o-ring that needs to be inspected and replaced regularly.
While not directly related to the gas system I've had and seen more parts breakage with the Remingtons.

It is too bad that Remington has expanded the selection of the 105cti shotgun, because it sounds like a pretty good shotgun, and it time they replace the aging 11/87. The 105cti should be made available in less expensive hunting models, like synthetic stocks with camo, and just plain hunting models. I am surprised that they are only making the 105cti in very expensive high grade wood, and that stupid carbon fibre junk. Maybe 2010 will bring some new models.
Its not hard to figure out that if they would introduce a reliable, semi-auto in the $1000 range they would dominate the market.

I'm with CB on this. The Berettas gas system need VERY little maintenance compared to the 1100.
I always needed spare O-rings on hand with my 1100 while duck hunting. (not so much with skeet)
My Extrema however has needed nothing and it's balls deep in all sorts of different rounds. It cycles some very light reloads reliably too.
A few friends with the SBE II that come hunting and skeet shooting have issues with the light target loads sometimes. (But an awesome fowler gun they are at that)
My 1100 is more a loaner now as I won't take it on hunting trips although it is a great gun.
