I am currently waiting to test 143 eld-x reloads.( just need time to shoot ) The factory ones shoot well. I am thinking of trying 140 VLD.s as well, but I know nothing about them.
Is it possible to shoot these from a mag? Savage stealth 6.5, factory mag. Lots seem to load them very close to the lands.
I guess I would like a 140 vld hunting option, (mag) and a 140 target option. ( 1 at a time? )
 
When Berger sold target bullets and didn't recommend them for hunting the standard recommendation was to lightly jam them.

When the market changed and hunters were buying them, the recommendation miraculously changed to jumping being cool and mag length loads, and saami COLs in factory loads being righteous behaviour. Oh the irony.
 
I use berger almost exclusively in my 30s and 7mm. When using the VLD's I had fantastic results but always jammed, and too long for mag. I've since switched to the classic hunters and they perform well with mag length ammo and they don't give up much in the way of BC. Don't own anything in 6.5 so take it for what it's worth, but I would get a small quantity of each for testing purposes.

Anyone that even "thinks" that Berger makes a true hunting bullet, is deceiving themselves. Sooner or later, that fragile bullet will cause a lost animal.
On the other side of the coin, Berger bullets tend to be wonderfully accurate, so they get my firm accolade for any target purposes. D.

Ya 130 SST's in my 270 are sketchy on deer.

I wouldn't sweat it too much using a heavy for caliber Berger in a standard short or long action chambering, would probably perform the same as most cup/core bullets.
I would not consider them at all in any magnum unless downloaded, or any bullet light enough to push 3000fps.
At some point they will let you down. The window where they are effective is narrow. Too slow they pencil through, too fast they frag. Not worth the chance when there are better premium bullets actually designed for game.

Keep using them, then. I do NOT use them, since there are so many very good game bullets out there that are much more dependable than one that
usually disintegrates, or pencils through.
I have a close friend who used them for two seasons. He has sworn off them now due to poor penetration on angled shots. One elk had to be shot
2 more times to anchor it. Bullet that finally did the trick....not a Berger. D.
