Ok, so Berger introduced the CH line of bullets for those restricted to SAAMI seating depth. Roger so far. What I don't get is why the .277 Classic Hunters have a significantly higher BC and look much sleeker than the same weight .277 VLDs? Meanwhile the other calibers with bullets in the same weight for VLD and CH show an advantage to the VLDs as you'd expect.

I figured maybe the pics of the .277 VLDs and CHs got swapped, but I just got a box of the 140 CH, and they look as advertised. Why would the CH, which is intended for SAAMI length, have a higher BC than the VLD? Is that a misprint in the catalogue? What's the point of the .277 VLDs then? Why wouldn't you just take the higher BC bullet and seat it out? There's plenty of length for that.

I'll ask Berger, but I thought someone here may have a clue.

no first hand experience with the .277" but Bryan Litz has the BC of .271 G7 for the 140gr Classic Hunter, and .258 for the 140VLD

(130gr CH .260, 130gr VLD .236)

7mm 168 CH's shoot great in my 280 Ackley

My shooting partner came across this awhile ago. Had a load worked up that reached the lands and fit the mag. Bought 500 more and they are a completely different bullet. Same # but wont get near the lands and fit the mag. Doesnt shoot at mag length either. Berger never gave a straight answer.

Im starting to get a little pissed at bergerfor never making the same bullet twice in a row.

Yeah... about that BC... well, I'll have to shoot them and run the numbers, but .271 looks awfully generous to me comparing them to the other 140s I have on hand. Hardly a scientific method, but I'm struggling to see how they can have a better BC than the Sierra 140 TGKs. Like, the profiles aren't even close.

The Sierra 140gr TGK has a G7 BC of .236. All the numbers I've posted are from Bryan Litz at Applied Ballistics

No doubt that sounds infuriating.

OP your thinking seems logical. Why WOULD anyone want the vld if it's bc is lower...

Indeed. It just doesn't look right to me. The Berger has a bit more of a boat tail, but the TGK looks considerably more streamlined, plus it's tipped. We'll see I guess.
