I wonder what story it would have to tell.
What I got here is a St-Ethienne 1916 Berthier 1907-15. I believe it has survived without being refurbished by the French arsenal system. It is interesting because it retained the skinny sights blade of older models. The barrel was produced by Manu-France of which is the only marking of which I assume is in ball D because of the overall production year. Kinda wish I new more and would’ve bought the book Chassepot to famas. Is this a sort of transitional model that escape France?

That is quite a nice example you have there, without a doubt. You are correct, Ball D was the ammo used during the great war and right up until the end of ww2 with certain units who were still carrying berthiers that weren't changed over to 7.5 french. The ball D ammo is the type you would normally buy from Privi partizan, so no worries about looking for ammo with the old round nose bullets. Just be careful of any military surplus ammo, do not use any of the Ball N in your rifle, since yours doesn't have the N stamping on the chamber area.
