When I bought my .30-06, I was stuck in the mindset that it just had to be a detachable mag and that was that.
Now that I have a 700 SPS Varmint in .223, and have seen just how easily it loads from the top, and that the hinged floor plate really isn't that big of a deal to get the cartridges out, I think I'm hooked. I doubt I will ever buy another rifle with a detachable mag. I figure carrying around a box of cartridges (if I ever need to do that, seeing as how its a pretty heavy gun) is probably just as bulky as having spare mags on hand.
The detachable mag on my Savage 111FCXP3 can also get annoying. The release on it is quite exposed, and if you hold the rifle near where it's located, often you end up bumping it on recoil, and it dislodges the magazine.
I guess all I'm saying is, if you haven't had the chance to try a gun with a hinged floorplate, definitely give it another chance. I'm not trying to talk you out of it either however. If you know it's what you have to have, then go for it! There's lots of guns out there to choose from, and we all have our preferences!
