Savage 10 McMillan 308 W w/ 10 twist 24" pipe, set up for 1000 meter shooting

best component bullet for handloading?

your thoughts?

Your going to find it really difficult to beat the ballistics of a 155 Gr Lapua Scenar at any range from a .308WIN. 175+ are for 300 win mag and the likes. Longer bullets = less powder = slower velocity. I tried 210 SMK's and couldn't get them to go much faster than about 2350 FPS.

Go to JBM and compare. 155 scenar @ 2950 FPS vs 210 SMK @ 2350 vs 175 SMK @ 2700. Those are some numbers I get from my rifle...and the scenar wins in all respects.

155 gr. A-MAX
46 gr. Varget
CCI BR2 primer
Lapua brass - fire formed
2860 fps in my TRG-22 (1 in 11 twist)

Very good results.

If i were to build a 308 for mag feeding, i'd go with 155 amax's just because they stay stable through transonic. If i were to build a ftr gun, i'd throat the gun long and test every thing from 185 lrbts through 208 amax to 230 grain hybrids.

Nemesis 308 208 gr Amax 50 gr, R-17, BR-2, OAL 2.885 hand loaded, 2600+, i am gone use them for the Mile Shoot, accurate beyond belief... JP.

I've also had good luck with 155 scenars with Varget powder. Might give some heavier bullets a try, like the 178 Match HPBT from Hornady (not the A-Max) and maybe even a 200gr + bullet of some sort.

My 2 cents.
1 in 10 twist is constructed for the heavier 308 cal bullets. 175 grains to 205 grains. But the shorter 22 inch barrel isn't the optimum barrel for those weights. I would stay with the 168 to 178 grain bullets. Lapua Scenars, Nosler CC's, Hornady A-Max, Sierra Match.
Have fun!

Are you looking to compete in F-Class or just make hits?

loading for a friend, he just wants to be able to make hits.

I think the 178 Amax could be a good one, should be about to hit 2650 fps in the 24" pipe with ease, and according to the specs it should be able to get to 1000

thanks guys

mmm I like the 175smk/178amax win brass 44.3 grs of Varget 210M in my longer 1/10 gun

The beauty of the Amax 208 when they go subsonic they dont distort and keep going strait from it excelent BC (.648) after some serious reads and calculation this bullet launch at 2600+ could reach 2000 yards, we will know at the Mile shoot... JP.

If it were me and I was asking because I wanted the most accurate 1000m bullet, I'd be listening to the folks that shoot 1000m for accuracy the most. The TR and f class guys are all pretty much on the same page with some type of 155 driven as close to 3000 fps as you can get. There's a reason for it. It's a proven combo.

Until recently, the rules said you could not use a bullet heavier than 156 gr. Many people continue to use those bullets as a result of that. It has nothing to do with them being better. There are many better choices that will romp any of the 155's in the wind, even out of a shorter barrel.
