Best 1000 meter bullet for 10 twist 308 Win

if you reload then id say try everything out.
each barrel tend to like different grains of bullets and powders.
just purchased 30-378 1600yard rifle and been trying few loads. will take weeks but hope i find the right one! lol
 
It depends on how hard you want to work at this. For sheer ease of finding a load, you can't beat 175 SMK and a healthy dose of Varget. It just seems to work in any .308 going, and it doesn't care about distance to the lands. If you want to tinker, 185 Berger BT or 210 amax are great long range choices- again with Varget, n150, h4895, r15. There lots of ways to skin this cat.

1 in 10 twist is constructed for the heavier 308 cal bullets. 175 grains to 205 grains. But the shorter 22 inch barrel isn't the optimum barrel for those weights. I would stay with the 168 to 178 grain bullets. Lapua Scenars, Nosler CC's, Hornady A-Max, Sierra Match.

Why do you believe heavier bullets require a longer barrel for optimum performance? Heavier bullets with a similar profile to lighter bullets arrive at the target at the same time despite a significantly lower muzzle velocity. In other words, the slower heavy bullet gives up its velocity more grudgingly, so it shoots as flat as the faster light bullet. The powder volume of the .308 cartridge pretty much eliminates the possibility of using powders that have a slower burning rate than 4350, and as a rule heavier bullets require less propellant than lighter bullets when loaded with the same powder, so less time is required to transform its powder charge into gas energy. All this suggest to me that heavier bullets are the better choice if you have a short barrel .308, where the lighter bullet needs the long tube to burn the same percentage of its powder column to maximize its velocity so it can stay above trans-sonic velocities at long range.
 
50 gr of R-17, 208gr Amax BR-2, OAL 2.885 .010 of the land, single handloaded give me an average of 2600-2605 fps with 4 of SD out of the Nemesis 20 inch tube... This is an absolute MAX load, had slight pressure sign at 50.2 gr, accuracy is outstanding .35 MOA @ 200 metres... JP.
 
Yes 1 in 10, it is a very fast barrel but the load is humongus in power, i was surprised of the velocity, this is a very compressed load, R-17 is THE powder for the 208 gr Amax... JP.
 
Every powder is different. You'd have to compare the published data for the 208AM with R17 to be able to say whether it's an over MAX load, or not.

There are a bunch of guys in the US running the 208AM at about 2600-2650fps. Moly will help you get to that velocity without running into excessive pressure.
 
I will say that, i have been shooting the 308 for over 35 years and i think that this combo 208 Amax/ R-17 is opening unseen performance for the 308... My 0.02 cents. JP.
 
One more for the 208 Amax and R17. I have been fortunate to have excellent results with everything I have tried out of my Savage 10 FCP-K (110 vmax, 155.5 berger fullbore, 175 SMK) but the 208 amax was just outstanding. All other loads I used varget but with R17 behind the 208 I literally shot a 1 hole 3 round group at 100yrds while testing. Chrono read...2574, 2574, 2574. At 1000 (and being new to this distance) i was able to hit our gong keeping it around 1moa. Loved this combo so much, I rechambered my .308 to 300wsm and while testing just a couple of weeks ago it is still holding .5 moa or less at 200 yrds with around 2820 fps. Can't wait to get up to 1000 with it. ;)
 
Imagine when i will be grouping a ten shots group ( at that size it is more of a pattern) in 3 feets at the Mile Shoot with that combo 208 Amax and R-17 out of my Nemesis 308, it is gone be goood... JP.

Did F Class have such a rule? I guess its kind of a toss up between slow and heavy or fast and sleek. I think if I had to make the choice it would be fast with a decent bc over slow with a slightly higher bc.
 
For Palma Shooting (target rifle with iron sights, shot off the elbows with jacket and sling); bullets weight limits are 156 gr. in .308 Win and 81 gr. in .223 Rem

At present, no bullet weight restrictions for FTR.........
 
Yup. That and that Lapua used to advertise the BC of their 155 Scenar as being 0.508 before Litz came along and debunked that number.
