I'm looking to get (new) either a commander or range officer and my cap is $1500 all in. I'm getting overwhelmed somewhat with the options and choices of manufacturers being still new to the sport .

Right now top of the list is the Springfield Armory range officer in 45.

Is anyone interested in commenting on that pick or suggest others ?

Regarding the budget I am more concerned with the handgun itself regardless of # of mags and accessories included

Thanks for any help. Also , I'm partial to rails / tactical features

The Springfield Range Officer is a great choice for the money but no rail.

Sig Sauer make some 1911s with rails close to your limit (there is one at P&D for $1220 http://www.p-d-ent.com/index.php/firearms/20-pistols-restricted). I'm not a big fan of the slide profile of the standard Sig 1911s (I like the classic styling personally), but you might not mind it.

Colt 1911s with rails will run a little more than your limit but you may find a used one that suites you.

At the value end, there are SAMs with rails for less than $1k, and they have a respectable reputation. https://www.wolverinesupplies.com/P...ANUFACTURER=SAM (SHOOTERS ARMS MANUFACTURING)

I would buy the Springfield personally.

Springfield Range Officer Operator has a rail and is close to that price range. I like the fit and finish of the ROs vis-a-vis the Sigs that I have seen lately.

CRAFM has a RO Operator listed for $1340, but it's a 9mm. I saw a 45 RO Operator at Wanstalls a couple of weeks ago. I think it was in the $1450 range. That gun was I'm stainless.

Thanks everyone, for your input. as it is right now, online selection from all the major retailers is pretty much picked clean in the $1200-1500 range for Springfield's and Sigs without going to the basic military or govt models. I see a few carry models, 4.25" barrel. What are groupings like compared to 5"? I'm definitely not into formal target shooting, but I would pass if its a huge difference over groupings.

It might be worth handling them. I have a government (and love it) but really like the look of the commander sized 1911's. Thought "the more the merrier" then I had the chance to handle one. Don't think I'll be buying one anytime soon. The balance felt completely off to me with that weight missing off the end of the gun.

Lots of folks like the balance of the commander length. If you spring for a half decent model (which 1500 would definitely get you) and get the basics down, you probably wouldn't see a dramatic difference in accuracy

ill echo above, ive got the Ruger SR1911 CMD and i really like it.

have a look at the Remington R1 Commander Enhanced as well, i was looking at one not too long ago and it was niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!
if i didnt already have a dozen 1911's id snap one of those up!

Shooters Choice has one in stock and they are site supporters @ $1375.

That's funny you mentioned the Remington R1. I just finished watching Hickock's review of the R1 enhanced. I know he tends to be a touch favorable with his reviews especially when his sponsor is providing the firearm, lol, but he seemed genuinely impressed with the Remington.

I think I've got my selection narrowed down to a Sig SR1911 (edit, I mean the RUger) and the Remington RD enhanced (full size though) now. I kinda put the Springfield Range Officer on the back burning only because it seems very hard to locate a stainless steel.

prices on those Remmy R1 Enhanced have been creeping up.
i see Cabela's has them for $1000, wasnt 2 years ago they could be got for $800.

the price creep on guns is getting annoying!

Take a good look at the CZ Shadow2. .....in your price range, total quality, competition rekady, tons of accessories.

That's really helpful when the title specifically stated 1911.....

I would hold out for the Springfield over the Remington or Ruger. The adjustable sights are worth the small price difference especially if you intend to try various loads. Second choice would be a Colt Competition. If you prefer the 'tactical' type sights then I would rate the Colt first as they've got the low drag look but are still adjustable. You can then also use the phrase, "if it ain't a pony it's a phoney!". I disagree but still find it humorous.
