best 22 bolt under 500 whats you opinion/experince ?

Have a look at a CZ Scout. Yup, it's short, but easy to get used to. Get a decent 3-9 ao scope, 5 shot mag and you're good to go. A few bucks more maybe, but dang they shoot, if you can.

That's what I would do. Scout is my favourite hunting CZs. Shoots sub MOA with a "big scope/target ammo" and handles beautifully with a slip on Pachmayr recoil pad.

Someone was just selling one on the E/E the other day for under $500 (NIB)...

The II BV Seems like it has a low cheek comb for an optic ? Experience ? Yes or no ?

The BTVS Is over 500 even with the mail in rebate an free shipping. Very nice though.

The MK 2 heavy barrel is 279, drop a boyds on there and I think its a solid choice !

I never had any issues with comb height and was running a vortex cross fire ii 4-16x50 on mine

My buddy's rimfire Zastava has extraction issues and is ammo fussy for function. Apparently it's not uncommon. The magazines are also hard to find and not that great.

I think that the Zastava with vortex combo from the EE is a great deal as long as it is extracting without issues.

My Z5/MP22 has some extraction issues also. If your buddy has found a fix pls let me know.
On the other hand it's an all steel and wood rifle, no plastic, hard to find that in a rifle nowadays for less than 600.
Love the trigger, easy to adjust.
Mags are great in my opinion, again all steel. I got two with my rifle and don't think I can ever wear them out.
Never had a failure to feed.
I know at some point Sail was selling the mags, but don't know if they still do. Traded also used to but are currently sold out.
The chamber is pretty tight, probably good for accuracy but might be part of the fte's.

I have the same rifle with the same scope as the Zastava in the EE.
It's very accurate and the scope is decent quality for the money.
Mine has extraction issues with some bulk ammo. I feed it Federal
American Eagle and bulk Federal blue box with zero problems.
The adjustable trigger is awesome.

Just got the Ruger American .22. Takes same mags as 10/22. Has two risers with it, one for open sights, one for a scope. Seems like a quality gun, although I did have to drift the rear sight quite a bit to get it shooting on target. With the open sights, it is very accurate at 25 yards. Probably put a scope on it next week.

Agree 100% Ruger American. The savage is a fine gun I'm sure but the Ruger American takes the same mags and right out of the box I dropped 4 out of 5 gophers with it and the 1 I missed was #4 because I was chuckling at how accurate it was. Gets my vote hands down. Only downside is it can be a bit of a pain to mount an optic on. Good Luck

Can find a used cz for under 500. But if that isn't working for you then zastava are really nice. I had 2 of them easily as accurate as my cz 452's all steel and adjustable trigger.
If that still doesn't float your boat ruger american. That would be it. Looked at a marlin xt 22 a few weeks ago when my gf was looking for a 22. Felt cheap looked cheap. Same for savage (I have had lots of those).

Any modern gun should be able to stand-up to a fair amount of use/abuse...but keep in mind there is a pretty wide variety of guns being bounced around in this thread and I have a hunch not every one would suit every shooter. I think you should specify whether you want heavy or standard weight barrel...iron sights or scope only, etc. Reason I say that~lugging around a heavy-barrel gun...or taking offhand shots with it~not going to be all that much fun. If you want a gun that can stand-up to the elements too..then stainless/synthetic should be a consideration. More info might help us narrow-down a good choice for you.

Having said all of that~you'd be hard-pressed to beat a Ruger American for value, and for the gun being a handy size with a flush-fit...reliable 10rd. magazine, etc. It's available in a standard, or compact version. I'd suggest the standard length if you're planning on using iron sights mostly...but either gun would be good for scope use. Second choice would probably me a Marlin XT-series, however, for sling carry...I far prefer flush-fitting magazines. So, the Ruger American would get the nod.

If there is any chance Santa will be bringing you any $ this Christmas...$500 isn't THAT far away from a CZ452 American. (standard-weight barrel/no iron sights) It would be a tricky gun to track down new mind you, and you rarely even see used copies come up for sale. If you plan on using iron sights mostly, you could look at the LUX models as well.

i bought a zastava. it had extraction issues.
went back on warranty, came back with extraction issues.
swapped it for a different brand new one, which had extraction issues.
traded it for a marlin, which works flawlessly.
