Best .22 for a new shooter

Spend 500 to 600 on a used cz American it’s very versatile
And amazing
But before you do anything and I can’t stress this enough go to some stores and shoulder these rifles... try the bolt take your time see how you feel with it. I really thought I wanted a ruger American then I shouldered it realized it felt like a toy
So definitely feel these rifles.
Would you buy a car without even sitting in it probably not
That's good advice.. I have a used CZ and it is a gem

What this guy said is right . you have to feel comfortable with the rifle your going to be shooting . some of the new rifles are like shouldering a boat anchor . been shooting an older 10/22 for many years with a decent 3x9 scope on it and have killed many groundhogs with it in the past. the older ones are better than the new ones. as for Savage bolt action 22 rifles they work just great and are accurate. if your hunting you want something that's accurate and most of all reliable. and when you pick it up and shoulder it your cheek should rest nicely on the stock and I prefer rifles with iron sights and the option to put a scope on it .

I like a wood stock over plastic. it feels much nicer against my face. also remember if you buy a semiauto you limit yourself as to what ammo you can use. with bolt action pump or lever action 22 rifles you can use CB's short long and long rifle shells. don't cheap out either. save up and buy something you will be proud of forever. good luck and safe shooting .

I understand the saying, try before you buy.

I bought my first savage Mk2 and Marlin 981T from the EE, based on pictures alone. IMO, you can’t go wrong with the fit of CZ, Savage or Marlin or Rugers. Sure some may feel or look cheap, whatever that means. But I’ve never held or mounted a mainstream brand pistol or rifle that I didn’t like.

Savages look and feel built at a lower quality level than CZs but I have every intention of keeping my 3 Savages for a long time, because they are basically as accurate as my 3 CZ452s.

Thanks for clarifying :) I was only planning on buying one at first. Those were the models I was debating between :) Budget is important to me. Will look up the Scorpio. Was hoping for something around 300$ for a starter gun (with a scope...maybe)

I found mine likes CCI standard velocity for best accuracy, and at 20 yards, puts them all in the same hole (with both iron sights and scope); you will need to take the time to set up the sights, but the rear is adjustable for both elevation and windage. They are solid rifles that have a lot of real steel in them, and the thumb-hole stock is very comfortable to shoot.

At $200.00 you can buy a reasonable scope and rings and be within your $300.00.

x2 on the stock being comfortable. IMHO, it is much more comfortable than a typical Savage/Marlin stock. The barrel is a little shorter (20") than normal but heavier, so it points very well.
If you go this way, get at least one extra mag for around $20, they are available now, but I assure you some day you won't be able to find one. There are only a small run of these guns available, and this is the first and likely last time they will be in Canada at any price. The same action design was used in the NS522, and previous EM model.

The action on these guns is at or above the cz452 in quality, so this is a tremendous value for the bargain shopper. Unfortunately, they made an oopsie when specking / choosing the stock and corrected the problem with washers.
But they shoot fine with the washers, will probably shoot better if you have it bedded.

Also, get one of these 2.65cm diameter, Tourbon Tactical bolt knobs (silicon) and put it on with some red loctite.

This is with a UTG 3-9-AO bug buster scope, a great scope for a .22. Note that mounting options are limited with this kind of scope on a bolt action because of the short tube. In this case, it sits a little forward, but works for me.

Hi Gents,

I just bought my first .22. A Ruger 10/22 with the Weaver scope and case combo. $379.99 at Bass Pro Vaughan Mills after they price matched it with an online retailer.

I'm not a hunter, just a plinker, but everyone needs a .22. And the Ruger fit the bill for me in a few ways.

1. It's non restricted. No paperwork red tape range only bs. I have a little more freedom when using it than I do with my other restricted firearms.
2. Ammo is cheap compared to pretty much any other calibre out there.
3. It can be used to hunt. Obviously you're not taking down grizzly bears or moose, but you can take small game.
4. Semi Auto is fun. And more so when it is inexpensive.

Now with that being said, I haven't shot this thing yet and I anticipate a few minor problems. But it looks like there are plenty of aftermarket parts and fixes out there that will solve any issues I may have. I think Ruger makes a decent product and having the scope and case included definitely influenced my decision to buy this particular model. This is the first .22 I have bought but I plan on buying a decent quality bolt action as well at some point in the future.

Cheers,
EZTRGT
Kyle

Dont forget about the Cz 513 bolt action farmer. Its a great gun but the trigger is non adjustable and a little peanut butter crunchy. Lol, it's not that bad but does have some creep. I do like my 455 better but the 513 is a classic. For me qnyways.

It is my understanding that these are actually built on an old model Anschutz tooling that was bought from Anschutz. The bolt throw and stroke is as short as they come. The trigger is not adjustable, but is pretty good right out of the box, but I did bed the action using JB epoxy putty. Much better.

Could you post a photo of how that bedding turned out?

Browning T-Bolt is best .22 i ever owned for small game and target. like others suggest the CZ is good but the Anschutz is better. I have bull barreled ruger 10/22 and it is an awesome squirrel gun. But my fav squirrel/rabbit rifle is the ruger 77/22

I am a new shooter as well, just ordered my first gun and I choose a Henry Golden Boy .22. It will primarily be used for backyard plinking, I like the nostalgia of the levers, and it has an octagon barrel for extra coolness.

great advise! I was (and still am) planning to do that but wanted to get `the lay of the land` first ;)

Thanks! Will do! Newb question: why does semi auto limit your ammo choices?

Hey pbruce706,
I am about to join the bolt action family. Found a CZ 455 Canadian edition for $610 after tax.
Have any comments on yours?
I may just get a Savage mark II FXP from Cabela’s as it already comes with a scope and is couple hundred cheaper.

Savage MKII is the best .22LR on the market for bare bones reliability, accuracy and affordability IMHO
You can shim the trigger assembly easily with hand tools and polish up the sear/trigger and bolt and make it REAL nice with about 20 mins work while drinking a pilsner.
Meter for meter it's the most accurate rifle I own which still astounds me. Its lazer accurate and shoots even the most garbage .22 with no issues.
I can print better groups with it at 100 meters using the irons than with 180C, AR15, Israeli Mauser etc etc
The mags are all over and like $19 a pop, parts all over for dirt cheap etc. Plenty of aftermarket upgraded iron sights, stocks etc
I think I picked mine up off the EE like new for about $180 shipped to my door!
Plus it's a full sized length rifle which is nice!

Also on a side note my only other .22 is a Rem 597 stock except for Tech Sight precision peep sight upgrades.
I've been shooting the hell out of it for well over 8 years and I've never had a single stoppage using the 10 round mags. I can't even hazard a guess as to how many rounds I've put through but there isn't a range trip where it doesn't come out.
It's also scary accurate. Not sure where all the hate comes from for them. Oh well, she's on my never sell list!
