Although I am a 10-22 fan, I was wondering what would be the best .22 out of the box for shooting gophers etc. I'm not interested in the peep sight/target models, but am interested in something like the R-22. I wouldn't mind spending a few extra dollars for something reliable/acurate, as opposed to building something.

Thanks for the tip Longbranch. I don't know why, but for some reason I shy away from the Marlins.

I think Marlins are the sleeper 22lrs... I strayed away from them for awhile but when I played with the Marlin 883, I was very impressed by it (especially for the money).

I am also a big fan of CZ 452s (especially the "Style"). Get some 10rd mags and give 'er :D Not as fun as a semi-auto but taking out gophers past 100m can be very rewarding ;-)

custom 10/22s are still some of my personal favorites for gopher guns - build to suit and load up a slough of mags and have at 'er. In my opinion, you can throw on a bull barrel (Clerke), aftermarket stock (Hogue for me), and hammer (VQ or PC) and with the right optics/mounts, you will be able to hit your fair share of pesky varmints. The changing of parts takes all of ten minutes but improves the accuracy/functionality/fun factor of the gun a few times over :D One of my 10/22s still holds my personal record for a gopher kill (just over 115m) and as such, holds a special place in my heart as superb varmint gun.

One to watch, the TC Benchmark. Until recent quality issues and issues related to having a match chamber started popping up, I would have said "get it" without any reservations.

Buy a Brno..a Model 1, 3, 4, 5, etc...all are excellent with some variation in barrel weight, safety, etc. You can usually pick a good one at a gun show up for somewhere between $200 and $400...they are all incredibly accurate, with great fit and finish...even the ones with a great deal of wear still shoot great...in my opinion they are the best .22 ever for the money...even the cheapened modern version (plastic innards..plastic clip), the CZ model-whatever, is not that bad...but the quality of fit and finish does not compare at all to the earlier Brnos...there are still plenty of them floating around. I bought a brand new model 5 last year (mod. 5 is like a Mod. 1 with improved trigger and safety). Brand new...made in the 1950's and still unfired. So they are out there if you look for them.

I second the CZ.. It is just pure quality.

I absolutely love mine.

For the price I don't think you can beat a Toz 78. Adjustable trigger pull and creep + 4 magazines for 100.00.

The CZ452 seems to be excellent rifle for the price though if you have more $$$ (I need one of those 452 americans).

I also have a Lakefield/Savage MarkII that is pretty good too (my first 22!). However, it is a toy compared to my Mossberg 46, all 9 pounds w/scope, another good shooter.

Mart.

Marlin 60. $175 @ SIRMAILORDER

2000 rounds deep in less than two weeks; I've yet to have a problem.

The basic adjustable iron sights give surprising results.. Empty shotshells at 50 yards (standing unsupported) are a breeze- all I did was clean off the packing grease and load up!

Thats my biased veiw after owning too many rimfires and coming back to a winner.
OR.... Buy a $500 rifle and don't enjoy it 'cos you might scratch/break it!
