Years ago, when I shot competetively, we used Winchester T22's and Ely 10X when we could get it.
We found the Imperial/Cannuck stuff was much less accurate, and less reliable also. (Yeah, I know, Old Fart)
Although the standard answer is what shoots best in your gun, there are always exceptions.
What's the best stuff out there today? I may be doing a bit more 22 target shooting. Time to dust off the old Russian bull barrel.

Eley and Lapua.
PMC Scoremaster is worth trying, RWS if you can find it.
Which type depends on how much money you want to spend and how accurate you want to be.

Beyond the factory .22LR target loads, there are some people playing with conversion of factory ammo to 'truncated cone' or semi-wadcutter (also referred to as a SGB -Small Game Bullets).

Someone was making/selling a 'device' to aid in the conversion process - essentially it sounds like a cylinder that you insert a .22LR round into, the bullet tip sticks out the other end, and you file it off flat (I'm thinking the right sized socket wrench...)

It sounds like a bit of effort... but I've read a few reports that this can significantly improve the accuracy/consistency of some cheaper factory rounds (suggestion is earlier stabalization of the bullet in flight). I have not tried it myself yet to 'validate' the reviews.

Here's a review of the device mentioned above (links to the manufacturer don't work - guessing it didn't make the millions they'd hoped ;) ->

tried some FEDERAL PREMIUM GOLD MEDAL today and some WINCHESTER T22.... wasn't impressed, Going to try Eley ammo next, hoping for better results.

where are you guys getting your Lapua and Eley ammo? and how much are you guys paying for a brick?

I've had good experiences with Eley, and CCI green Tag.

Win T22 isn't anything special as far as I could tell, just standard velocity as opposed to more consistent.

Haven't had a chance to try any of the other premium loads.

Assuming you're shooting rifles as it hardly makes a difference in pistols.

Goose25,

International Imports sell Eley Target Rifle for 36.50$ a brick. If you have to add shipping to Montreal, then you can consider that 43$ is not that bad. Where did you buy yours ?

http://www.targetshootingproducts.com/

Dante's (le crosseur)... everything in that shop is overpriced!!! 25 round BC steel lips mags 42$, 10 round original ruger mags 21$.... and the list goes on and on...

I almost rather get them shipped to me from International Imports, don't like giving my bussiness to a fck me n the azz shop.

My only advice is stay away from Remington .22LR ammo if you want accuracy. Its amusing to fire and listen to the differences in the reports. Federal Gold medal was accurate but not reliable in my guns. PMC good too. Still trying some other ammo but I dont have a lot of selection where I live. :)

I loved Federal Classic in the 100rnd plastic cases from not too long ago... they don't make it anymore, but that stuff was cheap and consistent.

Goose 25, there should be a whole shipment of Lapua .22 ammo coming in at Club de tir Montreal... it aint cheap but its by far the most accurate stuff ive tried.

Eley target is ok... but Lapua Master or Midas is better.

yes that would be nice, I am aware of ELEY Target not being whats best out there, but I take what I can get my hands on;)

how much will a brick of Lapau Master be going for? want to send me a PM once they arrive?

thanks Bud-eee

I'm using the Small Game Bullet die for cheap Hi -Vel amo. It's a bit of work, but the results are surprising. I am using Remington's Thunderbolt, sort them according to rim thicknes and then truncate the bullets using the SGB die. When considering the performance /price index of these altered cartridges one cannot help wondering why nobody has come out with this little die years ago. At 50m the results are favorable when compared with Eley 10X, RWS 50 or RWS Target as well as the Lapuas. The match amo does not do well at 100m and the Rem- T'Bolts are way ahead in terms of group size in my rifle (CZ 452 with 6-24x44 scope) at that distance. Eley 10X are abt $15/box and the Rem. T'Bolts cost me $1.37box. For plinking this just suits me fine.

I did not try a lot of brands, but the Club 22 from Lapua shot in my ruger 10/22 did this little group at 50yds.

The round at the bottom is the first, which I used for aiming the rest of the group(10rnds total)

Myself and a few others I know have found that. The Fed.711B seems to have about one dud a box.

CCI standard velocity seems just as good a GreenTag.

The best groups I've ever shot was with Fiocci 320. It worked in my Sako's and Walthers. The stuffs hard to find and is about $6 a box.

I've also had good luck with some of the Lapua's, some of the better being the "Biathalon" and the inexpensive "Trainer". I have tried some of the moderate to higher priced Lapua and Eley but didn't find much, if any improvement.
