Can anyone, who actually uses or has used a .223 for coyotes, tell me which ammo works best, and advise your barrel length, and rate of twist? I'd like to use the same ammo for target shooting, and coyote hunting, without "breaking the bank". I'm thinking a maximum range of 300 yards. Thanks.

What rifle and barrel twist rate do you have? I shoot 75gr AMAX, seem to work great for both target and coyotes. In a pinch I shoot Winchester 50gr ballistic silvertips, since they are same POI at 100 yards. If you don't reload, the 53gr VMAX (hornady superformance) have good ballistics, and a decent BC. If you have a 1/12 twist heavier bullets are out of the equation. If you don't reload, the heavier bullets are tougher to come by also.

Thanks for the quick reply DMS1:) The rifle is an H&R, with a 22" heavy barrel. I don't have it yet, but H&R.com says it's 1 in 9" or 1 in 12"....I'll know when I get it in my mitts:) I'll be buying factory ammo. Thanks:)

It is hard to beat a 55 grain soft point out of just about any .223 rifle, but if your gun has a little faster twist, then the heavier match bullets work really well on coyotes. 69 grainers are my personal favorite.

Thanks folks, keep the tips coming:) This is my first foray into "hot little pills", as other than .22LR, I've been shooting 130 gr to 200 gr all along: .32 Special, 300 Savage, .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, and 30-06 Springfield. I did sight my .270 in, with 100 gr, one coyote season, but only went out a couple of times. With a .223, I'll have a dedicated coyote rifle, and can leave the .270 set up for deer. Thanks again:)

My brother buys 45 gr (I think-could be 40 gr) Winchester whitebox ammo at Walmart. They are unbelievably accurate out of his Savage - to the point where he won't bother reloading. Price is about $28 for 40 rounds I think. It defies logic actually, the bullets have a folded copper tip which would reduce BC, but they hit whatever he aims at out to 400 yds.

do not even attempt to stick these through a remington 700.you wont hit nothing from my
prior experiences

Thanks guys:) The Winchester white box is 45 grain Jacketed Hollow Point. It has excellent reviews for accuracy, but is 45 grain heavy enough for eastern coyotes? Thanks again.

My Savage .223 is a 1:9", and for factory loads...it shoots 55gr. Hornady V-Max the best. The 53gr. Superperformance struggles to keep within an inch @ 100 yards, but 53gr. V-Max reloads (same bullet) are the best in my gun. Guess the point I'm making is fast twist doesn't always mean "go heavy" with the bullet weight, buy a box of everything you can get your hands on and hit the range. If it says ".223" on the box, your shot placement is good, and you stay within about 300 yards~the coyote should go down.

The 2 yotes i got this winter fell to the WWB 45 gr out of my little H&R Superlight ( they always come near the hen house) @ less than 75 yards, drop on the spot, and if you are collecting furs, dont use that ammo, very destructive... JP.

I took a few dogs down with those 45gr jhp's last year and seemed to work pretty good. Must of hit bone on one though because it blew a good sized hole in it

If you reload, there are plenty of options. Personal favourites are the 60 gr Hornady Vmax or 55 gr Sierra HPBT.

55 VM over CFE-223 in our 1:9's and 68 BTHP over Varget in our 1:8's...

I like the 68 BTHP too, but I think the 60 gr version of the Vmax carries a little more 'oomph' than the 55, and its short enough to still perform well (accuracy wise) in slower twist .22 centrefires.
