Best 22LR ammo for gophers

Bang for the buck is a tough one. Sure we would all like to have an unlimited supply of CCI Stingers just to watch them tear fist sized holes through gophers - but prices these days make it tough. Mini mags always seem to be more accurate than I am able to shoot and anchor gophers on the spot.

I like American Eagle 38gr HP, but they are hard to find now, so I settle for the Federal blue box bulk hollow points. 525? or something like that.

Winchester Super X Hollow Points were the best.

American Eagle is ok, in a semi, which you're not shooting, they will show light strikes before anything else.

I'm impressed with the Aguila Super Hollowpoints, they are very consistent.

Shooting gophers with round nose "solids" is a recipe for frustration.

Never has as many duds as I did with Remington Yellow Jackets...anywhere between 3 and 6 per boxof 50 duds.
American Eagle or CCI Quick Shok the best with explosive reactions.
But, anything with a hollow point will be fun.

You gotta pull the trigger long and hard wid dem Yeller Jackets.
Give that firing pin extra pewsh.

I like the CCI velociters . stingers are good too. the whomp sound puts a smile on my face. lol.

That's too bad.

30 years ago I had a bad lot of yellow jackets and returned some sample rounds to remington. They refunded ALL my money, IIRC if was for a full case.

Recent manufacture is much improved and very consistent.

No worries, good to hear someone took them to task on that ammo.
I bought two Remington vipers back in 1995 (iirc they became available in Canada) from Lever Arms.
One for me and one for my hunting buddy.
I also bought two bricks of Yellow Jackets the same day.
Not only did I experience duds so did my buddy, possibly same lots of the two guns and the ammo.
I still by Remington ammo (corlok) , but .22 ammo.
I am more than happy with American Eagle Hp's, CCI Stingers and Quick Shok....
Ones bitten twice shy has been my motto with Yellow Jacket ammo.
Tight Groups and Good Hunting this spring Gopher season.

Growing up broke even shorts got used a lot to hunt gophers when they were cheaper. Last shorts I bought were Remington Gold something then I stopped shooting due to health and living where coons and skunks seem to be the only thing to shoot at.

I had to save my allowance to buy a box of Whiz Bang 22 LR hollow points at the local grocery store ... I can't remember the exact price but I think they got up to around 85 cents a box. But they sure whupped the gophers good. Over the years I found most long rifle high speed hollow points shot very well.

Shooting gophers isn’t a hobby, at least not for me. The mess they can make of crops and pastures costs a lot of money. The gopher shooters I hang out with use hollow points when using .22’s, simple as that.

Don’t be the one asking why “they” just don’t relocate the poor, cute little animals. I relocate them - to gopher heaven.

I used to have good success with federal 525 bulk packs of hollowpoints. It's been a while since they were $17 at WalMart - Last time I looked they were about $60 at Cabelas... WTF?

In 1953 a box of Whiz Bang shorts was $0.51. When we graduated to Whiz Bang LR they were 75 cents per box or $6.75 for a brick . . . one free box.
They stayed at that price until the mid 60's. I don't remember Irv (Mr. McCracken) bringing in HP's.

Not to mention creating good organic fertilizer too.
