I just picked up a Savage 64 precision and a box of Federal Champion lead hollow point which I now realize was the wrong choice for a semi auto as they don’t cycle properly.
Any suggestions for a reasonable priced ammo?
It’s mainly for target shooting.
Is it worth it to spend more for a super high velocity?
I’ve been looking at the following.
WINCHESTER SUPER-X 22 LR 40GR LR-RN
CCI 22 LR AR TACTICAL 40GR
AGUILA SUPER EXTRA 22LR 38GR COPPER PLATED
Or the more expensive
AGUILA 22 LR INTERCEPTOR COPPER PLATED SOLID POINT 40GR

Any suggestions?
Thanks

First, I'd avoid HV ammo; it's unnecessary for the 64 and generally 'inaccurate' in that gun IME. I use Fed Auto-Match 40g RNL with fair accuracy, and as 45CAT said the CCI-SV-RNL also did well. Hollow points sometimes will 'catch' on the lip of the chamber, you might want to lightly polish the mag-ramp, too. Not much, as that can cause the bullets to go too low.
And as I've said before, polish all the internals that have 'Friction surfaces', get the MCarbo Spring kit to get the 'clothespin spring' then put part of a Bic spring into the T-return in place of the MCarbo one. Save that in case you don't like the bic.

I ran federal automatch in mine; ran great and shot well today in a match.

I did the polishing as per your pictures yesterday, mine was pretty good but cleaned it up like yours in the pics. I’m going to get the spring kit soon.
I bought a small box of Winchester super X today and it worked perfect today. I’ll try the auto match too and see which i like.
Thanks

Federal blue box and american eagle round nose have always been reliable. I never had any troubles with cheaper thunderbolts and golden bullets from remington as well.

HI again Codester - With my 64 FVSR (16.5" heavy barrel), I have found the most consistent accuracy comes with CCI SV, CCI Blazer, and S&B Canadian Match. So oddly it prefers SV ammo, but for some reason Blazer at 1235 fps is also great. I have also tried some much better quality ammo (ie SK and Norma), but it really likes the CCI stuff better. Which is great, cuz it's cheap. Didn't have the best luck with Aguila SV or HV. It also did not like CCI Mini mags either.

I found that the MCarbo spring kits are a must have for older 64s, but the newer ones seem to have much better trigger springs. I didn't even put in the MCarbo kit I have in my newer 64.

Good luck and happy shooting.
