I've been trying to get my hands on a TOZ-78 .22LR (Russian) for almost a year - to no avail. (they're obviously dear to the people who bought them from Armrus in Montreal).

It looks like Winchester has made a few changes and will soon be selling them for about double the price (i.e. $125 -> $250).

I'd still buy one at the new price... but since I originally made the decision they were the best 'bang for the buck' in the $125 range ... I need to revisit the value proposition: I'm looking for an accurate and durable .22LR repeater in the $250 price range ... Is there anything else that would be as good 'out of the box'?

(bolt action, detachable box mag, iron sights).

As an aside, LeBaron's has 'no idea' when they'll be getting the new 'Wildcats' in -> Has anyone seen them anywhere (in Canada)?

I'd go for a Savage Mk-2 for that price.

Also, check with Milarm - they had some russian .22's las time I checked. Might be different ones though

Thanks - I was looking at the Savage Mark IIs (G with or FVT with peeps)-> but didn't want to bias the 'open ended question' by indicating my alternative choice ;-)

I hear really good things about older Mossbergs too - and Milarm has a few in stock - but I'm overwhelmed by the number of models (i.e. which are good/better/best)

IMHO any older bolt action Mossberg will keep up with what is being sold today, and in many cases surpass it. Also they tend to come with Peep/aperture sights.

My choice would be a mag/clip fed Bolt action.

To some the cream of the crop in Mossbergs is the 44 US, and 144US.
Which where the US military training rifles...very nice, and very accurate.

Also scope mounts for full sized scopes are available, and they match up with the receiver holes that many mossys came from the factories with.

Someone on here was selling a Bolt action single shot. :)

Calum - thanks for the links - they'll help make it a little easier to figure out the Mossbergs.

... I suspect it's going to come down to what I can get my hands on first at this point (have new-gun money burning a hole in my pocket ;-)

I hate that feeling...gets me in trouble everytime. :D
Post pics (if you can) of what you get. :)

Get a cooey

Get either a cooey 600 or 60. I used to have one cant remember which one i had but tube magazine with a full forestock. With a 12 power scope i was hitting hole on hole at 50 yrds. They are extreamly accurate guns.
Very cheap as well. I dont like the drop down magazine so i prefer tubes.
cept for my 10/22 ;)

I popped into LeBaron yesterday to have a look at a Savage Mark II 'G' (wood stock, iron sights, sporter barrel). They only had 1 in stock, and after having a brief look at it I pointed out the significant amount of rust on the bolt - they agreed it was 'unacceptable' for resale and indicated they were going to return it to Savage (apparently they'd just received it the week previous). It was enough to make me leary about Savage's quality control and I'll probably ignore their guns now as a result.

... onwards and upwards!

One example out of millions of firearms made, and the rust could have been the result of many factors along the way...maybe a customs dog took a pee on the box. :D

yes you were correct.

Yes, you were correct, hence I was incorrect and put "54" instead of "64" - It is still one heck of an accurate and attractive gun however. There was one at Gagnon Sports last week in Oshawa with a cracked stock that had been repaired : price on it was $249.99 with a cracked stock and some minor pitting so I don't think my $325 is out of line. Thanks, Peter.

yep

Yep, when at the range it's fun to shoot the pushpins out of the other guys targets. I had a model 180 years ago and it too was a shooter. I believe the 180, 190, and 310 all used the same action with the 310 being the only repeater. I would hate to think what a similar quality Anschutz would cost new today.

I think the 310 is somewhat similar to the Anschutz 1416.
About $800 ???
