Best .22lr conversion for AR platform

DSCN0885.jpg

I used a CMMG stainless kit with Blackdog mags in my Dlask 7.5".

It ran great once broken in but dirty .22 ammo would start causing FTE's after a couple hundred rounds. A quick wipe usually got the bolt working again but when the AR would start short-stroking after a brick of .22 I would dump a few mags of .223 to "blow" out the gas tub….

While the kit worked as intended I personally got bored of shooting .22lr in the AR. Ended up selling it and my Advantage Arms G17 conversion kit.

The optimal twist for .22 is 1:16. The twist in a .223 barrel is 1:7 or 1:9, depending on the rifle. This means it will not be very accurate. .22 rimfires are also dirty-shooting cartridges, because their soft-lead bullets are lubricated with wax or grease. All .22s suffer from this, but ARs suffer even more because all that lead and lube sludges up the AR’s oversized, overtwisted barrels and gums up their gas tubes. Not a problem with a dedicated .22 upper.

I have owned three of them over the years. Spikes tactical and CMMG are exceptional quality. The trick is to make sure you buy a stainless steel version. Otherwise you will start to have issues as it gets dirty. Then buy a series of different types of 22 ammo. The reason being, that you will get a slightly different point of impact versus shooting 223 through the same barrel. I found using Winchester 36 Grain 333 packs of ammunition shoot almost exactly the same point of impact as .223
I have found that this CMMG kit is actually the most reliable, least finicky, most fun 22 caliber I am ever fired. Mine have all fired any kind of any mission with no issues. Even the cheapest garbage fires no problem. I'm going to mention it again, Make sure you buy the stainless version!!

Humm, looks like I'll be adding a CMMG conversion kit to the Christmas want list this year. I so happen to have a 10.5" barrel just sitting around gathering dust too but 1:7 twist though.

Watch for the Questar Xmas sale.....speaking from experience. :)

Don't stress over the twist-rate.

People get all worked up about it. Some will even draw a graph to show you why it's so terrible.

But in the real world; It means nothing.

My AR-15 with conversion bolt is every bit as accurate as my 10-22 is. Never a problem.

Thanks for that info. Good to know.

Thanks so much for the solid info guys! I've found just because someone sells something doesn't mean it will be any good and its great to get some real world opinions from people who have first hand experience
