That's great advice 22lr guy, but he did say he wants a semi auto, and I don't think there is much better out there than a custom 10/22, a factory kidd or volquartsen, etc. A ruger? Probably not, but one of the other 10/22's, what other semi would best them?

It would be hard to beat but expensive for a plinker.. I'd keep it for serious work
Accuracy wise, they aren't a Volquartsen.
Best and budget = 10/22 and a few others...
I can't say I really know any of the high end 22's just never made sense to me but maybe someday it will and I will be in the OP's shoes.
I fully agree. But.. it's not one that most on here know. Mention a $1000 10/22 and people go ohhh ahhh. Or anything Anschutz. What they don't know is that the R-55 has a steel receiver, the barrel is threaded in, is a match grade barrel and that these things will shoot 1 moa 5 round groups at 100 yards with CCI standard. I've shot two of these rifles (including my own) and you can shoot those little 22 targets at 100 yards/metres or shotgun shells with ease. You don't get the large capacity mags, just the flush ones and the longer 10 round steel mags but the rifle itself is everything the 10/22 should have been. Yes I do own a couple of 10/22 rifles as well.

Well when you specified semi-auto you made me throw out over half of the guns that came to mind. But I'll suggest three guns from least expensive to most. first is the Marlin Model 60, a lot of variants to be had so you can make your choice there, either for complete gun or starter to use aftermarket stock on. But the thing is the Marlin is a accurate rifle and the trigger improves with use, or you can have a gunsmith go over it. Second is Ruger 10-22 it costs more than the Marlin and I find them to be less accurate, at least out of the box. But boy are there a ton of aftermarket goodies for the 10-22. Third and lastly, but maybe the best offering is Browning's SA-22. The gun reeks of craftsmanship. four different grades so you can spend as much as your wish, maybe more. A look that jumps out anywhere you'll take it and it will be able to give you the ability to take small game and punch holes in paper and the odd soda can.

I'd have to agree. Dlask uses a 7075 aluminum receiver that betters both the VQ Superlite and the Kidd Supergrade 6061 receivers. A VQ rifle built on a stainless steel receiver is still my top pick, but with budget factored in, the DAR-22 is a great value. Get Dlask to add a Kidd single stage trigger and it's still just under $1000.
