Going to a local ranges annual "pumpkin shoot" in November and am looking for a good bullet choice to develop a load for before then that will blow them up spectacularly. Ideally I would want to use Barnes Varmint Grenades after seeing what they do to ground hogs but don't have a rifle in a calibre that they are made for (only made in .204", .224", and .243" as far as I have found.)

My rifle calibres available are 6.5x55mm, .308, .44 mag, and .45-70. Range will be 100 yards.

I was thinking a rapidly expanding .44 mag hollow point would do but need to see what my rifle can do at 100 yards (it's my brush gun so never really tested it past 50 yards before.)

Any recommendations? Are there fragmenting varmint bullets in 6.5mm or .308"?

Speer makes some light for calibre Hollow points that are very explosive with a gaping maw of a hollow point! I use them in my .270 win and get very explosive results with gophers!

There is a 95 gr Vmax available in 6.5mm.
110gr VMax ( I think) in .308, too
I'm an idiot... I didn't realize the "V" in "V-Max" stood for "Varmint". I thought they where target shooting projectiles or something but I guess that's the A-Max.

The only logical solution is to buy a rifle to suit the bullets available........
My thoughts exactly but I wont have enough spare cash until later in November :(

I wouldnt get varmint grenades. I loaded some for my 223 they were cruising at 3360 fps and all that happened was the gopher just fell over. Shot some under 20 yards and they got up and walked away.

Just tried .308 in the 110 grain V-MAX. Speed and violent smack at high speeds. Now if you really wanted to make big holes, you might wanna try the 100 grain Hornady Short Jackets. Open lead front looks to me like it would expand violently, plus you could push it at some good speed out of a .308. Mainly they are used in reduced loads for easy shooting I think, but you could try faster and see how it "pumpkins". Never used it myself but looks like it would be fun to try!

varmint grenades are the biggest marketing hood wink in the history of modern bullets, absolutly nothing exploseive about them. FS

pumpkins dont really blow up with anything cause they are hallow, was shooting at a few the other day it just makes the same size hole in and out pretty much

If you don't fill them with water, you will be disappointed, alright. Pain in the butt. Now, zucchini on the other hand, is a great target vegetable.

Are you guys telling me that shooting a plain old pumpkin with my 270 win and V-max are not going to make them explode? There go my plans for the weekend:(
