I'm sure this has been asked before, but my buddy is looking for an accurate, dependable gun for big game hunting. Let's here what y'all think

Savage 110 or 111 package gun . I'd replace the scope on ether later on. When I started out I had a Savage 110 package and it was tack driver, very accurate . Only fall back is you need to up grade the recoil pad on it,as she kills your shoulder. Put a Limbsaver on it and it was great.

Savage for sure.

I have both savage and weatherby vanguard. I love them both but the savage is a better value for the $ IMHO.

A second hand M700, the older the better. Most of the Winchesters are pretty nice as well. A push feed featherweight perhaps? With that budget no way would I even think about buying new.

There are really a lot of good guns out there, and only a few bad one's to avoid. I really like my Ruger Mark II, and I can't see any reason not to recommend this for a 270 as well, esp if the price is right.

I have bought three Marlin XL7s in 270. Gave one to a very good friend of mine who did me a huge favour, one is for my wife and one was for me.

All three have great triggers, a real recoil pad, and shoot well under an inch. Not bad for a rifle that retails for around $400 out the door.

That leaves you $250 to spend on better glass than you might have been considering. :)

New T.C Venture or Weatherby Vanguard used Win. 70 Rem. 700 Ruger 77 Last choice Marlin savage Stevens, not that they are of low quality they are simply crude .

Either the Marlin XL7 (Similar priced to the Savage/Stevens, but nicer looking bolt and general appearance) or the Weatherby Vanguard. Pick them up both and see which you prefer. They will shoulder a little differently because the Vanguard has a Monte Carlo style stock and the Marlin, a modern classic stock.
