Best 30-06 to purchase

- And don't forget your range card and tripod
;)

While a BAR would indeed be fun to have... For a hunting rifle, my vote would go for something a like practical. Like a nice Mannlicher-Schönauer...

A BAR is a practical hunting rifle.
Extremely fast follow up shots.

It depends on what you plan to do with it (like Legion said). Target shooting, sure, take your pick of bolt guns. Hunting, I prefer the Remington 7600. Accurate, no loss of sight picture, detachable mag, and quick reload.

I suggest you consider your end use.
I don't spend much time target shooting with my .30-06, M695 Tikka.
Most target time is just sighting it in.
It's my hunting rifle; matt stainless steel and synthetic stock.
That set up has served me well as I hunt camped out and in dirty weather. Or used to, before old age and arthritis came calling.

I love the Tikka T3x. Great rifle. Only gripe is the plastic "bottom metal". On the flip side, not only have I never had one fail, I also replaced it with a metal piece from PRPrecision.

Other rifles worth considering are the good old Remington 700 and Winchester Model 70 - I really like both of these, the current factory offerings are very good, and there are a lot of good secondhand choices. Weatherby Vanguards are also a really nice rifle, even the base model is a rock solid rifle - I have no current experience with the newest Howa rifles, but the Vanguard is made for Weatherby by Howa off the 1500 receiver. Browning X-Bolt is also nice, as is the Bergara B-14. I have multiples of all of them so stand by those ones. I have a Savage with janky feeding but is a pretty accurate hunting rifle outside of that, no experience with Ruger outside of the 10/22.

There are also many semi-custom or custom options out there as well - I wouldn't feel bad getting what you really want so long as you can afford it!

I’ve been rocking m98 husqvarnas for the last 4 years. 6.5x55 7x57 9.3x57 30/06. I am very pleased with all of them.

My next purchase will be a time t3x lite stainless fluted. However if you’re just gonna be shooting it off a bench I’d go with something heavier.

The ruger guide gun is also on my list. That would be a stellar choice aswell.

BBR is a nice rifle but you need to be a super hero to carry it all day, it's very heavy.
YES!!! I'm on the same page as you. The Browning BBR is a fantastic rifle. Any BBR that I viewed were great shooters, accompanied with a flawless action. They were equal to the Weatherby Mark V, back in the late 1970's and early 80's. I always encourage new hunters to purchase the older rifles of most brand names, not todays choices.

An older Remington 700 BDL. If you are going to hunt with it the odd ding or scratch just makes it easier to take care of in the field/boat/camp.
And put a good recoil pad on it sooner rather than later (like when you are in your 60's).

Husqvarna 1640 in 30-06. Produced in 1957. The picture is of my rifle from Intersurplus.
I loved this so much, I sold my almost new Howa 1500 in 30-06 (which was a great rifle to begin with).
In fact I like it so much, I just ordered another one in 6.5 Swede.

I am a big Tikka fan but I found a T3 lite in .30-06 to be quite uncomfortable to shoot. I find Tikka stocks don't manage recoil well, for me at least. A CTR with a vx5 in .308 is no issue buts its 9lbs3oz.

I have owned only 2 .30-06's but shot many and fairly regualrly shoot a .30-06 Rem 700 ADL for work.

I concur with one of the posts above - Sauer 100. I had one in .30-06 for while and it was great. Nice shooting, very accurate. The only thing to keep in mind is the long lengh of pull on the stock is better suited to taller shooters. A Howa 1500 hogue stock model was nice to shoot, as was a Weatherby Vanguard but both have some heft.

.30-06 is always a good answer to a hunting rifle question but unless you are sold on a .30-06 why not a Tikka in 6.5CM, or 7mm-08?

Find a minty older wood stocked Model 70 or Rem 700 with iron sights
Still the best all around rifles there are. On the Rem find one with a Timney or alternate trigger and you have a rifle that will last into the 10th generation down.
Throw in a Husqvarna in mint condition and you have solid rifles.

The Ruger Guide Gun is hideous. To each his own I guess?

As to which .30-06 to buy, I'd look for a used Ruger M77, Remington M700, Winchester M70 or a Browning BBR, A-Bolt, X-Bolt whichever, to start with.
But depending on where you are and what you're gonna be hunting, one the the Remington pumps or semis (there's lots of number variants of both over the years), Browning BLR or BAR would also be good.
