Best 30-06 to purchase

The Ruger Guide Gun is hideous. To each his own I guess?

As to which .30-06 to buy, I'd look for a used Ruger M77, Remington M700, Winchester M70 or a Browning BBR, A-Bolt, X-Bolt whichever, to start with.
But depending on where you are and what you're gonna be hunting, one the the Remington pumps or semis (there's lots of number variants of both over the years), Browning BLR or BAR would also be good.
Why NOT used Tikka T3 ? No body suggests that ? 🤷🏼‍♂️ RJ

Husqvarna 1900!
If I would buy a tikka it would be a battu in 30-06 great compact fast handling rifle with great sights! I don’t like plastic in general, so I’m not gonna buy one!
Browning BAR I have one from the early days, and I love it!
I also have a Ruger m77 mkII and a husky carbine the last one is becoming my favorite rifle, light, handy, open sights, adjustable comb! 7lbs as is! IMG_0684.jpeg

@ Rem Jim: I think a Tikka T3 would probably be a fine choice also.
You should always be shopping according to value and maybe take advantage of the opportunity that presents itself.

But I'd still stand by this, as a starting point:

I'm partial to Rem 700's; pre 64 Win Model 70's; Husqvarna's & Browning Abolt's for older rifles.

If it was a 'new' purchase I might go with a Tikka T3.

Those Battues used to come with walnut stocks as well. I haven't seen one for sale in years, new or used. They were far nicer than the tupperware offerings now.

That is what my Husqvarna 1640 30-06 I posted above did for me last night with factory ammo! We are talking way less than a $1000 rifle here! IMG_1151.jpeg

Lets be honest, but completely unfun.......... they are ALL pretty awesome in one way or the other.
best is to lust over some, then go to store an feel them all.

been caught out a few times when younger, feeel guns in shop to shoulder etc but without bolts likely for insurance/safety red tape, but thinking, Yes thats light,... then get it with the bolt in an whoossaaa,,,, different cat!?

A bolt a bit notorious for a heavy bolt, light as an love mine but the bolt could do with some Holes thru it..... :D :p

we are shooting a budget "Franchi" at the moment, an to be honest, for $750 , i would not like to be any Game this side of the Mississippi to the Serengeti ........

tikkas are NO fuss hunting guns that shoot most things straight.

plethora of second hand guns out there, not a huge gamble if reloader as can often make anything shoot , something, good.

Tikka T3X Super Lite 30-06 with handloaded Barnes 175 LRX at 2900 fps . Best ever 3 shot group ! 😀👍RJ
I have a friend in Ontario that lived out here in BC for many years and while we hunted and fished as often as we could, he didn't have a firearms license back then and only hunted with me. Well he finally after all these years informed me he took his courses (beginning august) and yesterday he sent me a pic of his shiny new RPAL. Now he wants a rifle for next year when he will join me on hunting trips out here in BC.
He's not knowledgeable on firearms at all so is leaning heavily on my advice for his first rifle.
I suggested a 10-22 of course
He countered with an add from Cabelas for the exact rifle you are talking about. In left hand 30-06 they have it for 1499 .... on sale. Seems steep to me but what do I know. LOL
I told him to go get a feel for one and to also try out a vanguard and xbolt and to try and find a rem 700 and a win70 to get a feel for them all before buying. The price tag is not really a concern for this guy but he also doesn't want to spend money he doesn't need to.
I am not a Tikka fan but I see you and many others on this site speaking highly of them over the years so I am tempted to give him the nod on that tikka at Cabelas..... but 1499??? I wonder if any dealers carry that rifle for a better price or is that a good price for a rifle he won't need to have shipped.....

beachfan , if you want something newer, Reliable Gun, a site sponsor has the Weatherby Vanguard in 30-06 on sale. That's a really nice rifle with a Howa 1500 action.

Nice rifle for sure, was there a recall with the bolt for a safety issue of some sort ?
I came across a Smith and Wesson not long ago which is basically the guns you mention in your post.
Had a beautiful piece of wood on it.
