Go and get yourself a Leupold VariX II 3-9x40, mount it on a Win M70, Rem M700 or Ruger M77 in .30-06 or .300WinMag. Sight in dead on @ 200 yards with 180gr Nosler Partition factory loads and you are good to go for 99.9% of hunting in Canada or anywhere else in NA for that matter. That is about as plain, simple and reliable as it gets. You won't be able to find any flys in that ointment :p And no mags to misplace/forget either ;)

As long as it's a 3200 or +. I've got an 3200 3-9*40 elite that has served me well for more than a few years. It will be replaced with a VXIII in short order.

Just don't buy a Leupold rifleman. Optics are ~OK, adjustments are absolute garbage.
 
500 yards dead on? I call BS. 300 yards dead on a moose, ok.

You really need to look at a ballistics calculator before thinking the .300 is going to out do your .30-06 by the margins you are thinking of. It just isn't as much as you think it is. You might increase your distance 50 yards more before worrying about bullet drop and that'.s about it.

See here and compare 180 gr bullets at 2700 fps(.30-06) and 3000 fps(.300 WM).

I think your whole assesment is stupid OK. If you need a .300 Mag to hunt moose 'cause your too old and tired to close the gap by walking an extra 400 yards to make it 100...how did you get there in the first place? I primarliy hunt elk, I have done so for 36 years now and there are more opportunities for long range shots on those critters than on a moose, I've never taken a 500 yd shot on an elk. Who the hell shoots a moose at 500 yds? You don't need a .300 WM, you need a reality check.

My own experience with aging is decaying eye sight and loss of muscle tone, making longer distance shots more difficult. By your logic you should call up hewhoshallnotbenamed and get a custom 50 bmg built for the day when you can't get within a mile of the animal.
 
If Sako is out of price range the Tikka T3 is a great choice. I have 2-270WSM in the LS model. My buddy has the 300WSM in the LS model plus a Varmint Stainless 22-250 and a 23 Tactical. All great shooters. Personally I do not care for the Synthetic model-sounds hollow, dont like the way it feels so I waited the extra year for the laminate stainless model.

As for scope-I will suggest Leupold scopes. VX2 3-9x40 or the 4-12x40 with L duplex. Or if youhave more $$ to spend, get the VX3 3.5-10x40 with the BC reticle. I have a few of the VX3's with the BC reticle-LOVE THEM. I also have the VX2 4-12x40 AO with LR duplex on my Sako m75SS 243. Another scope I will suggst is the Burris with the Ballistic Plex reticle. A friend has a couple of them- not a bad scope. Good thing with Leupold is that their warranty depot is located in southern Alberta if service is required or you want to do a reticle replacement. Every other scope is in the USA. If you go with Leupold scopes, you cant go wrong with the Leupold Alumina Flip-up lense covers either. I now prefer them over the Butler Creeks

Go with the Tikka Optilock Rings & Bases-I use them on all my Sako & Tikka T3 rifles. They are a bit more but well worth it in my books, especially on your 300WM. My Sako m75SS 300WM with Sako Optilocks and a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x40 since new in 1997/98 never lost its zero setting and its seen some rough times @ moose camp.

Really like the laminate Tikka heard very good reports I think that the way to go.
