best 303 load for moose

I have a box of factory loaded 303's, Federal High Energy with Trophy Bonded Bear Claws at 180 gr. They don't make that load anymore, I should have picked up a few boxes.... Who was to know...

I'm betting catnthehatt will say some of those CIL 215 grainers he's running out of!! ;)
And to think I have almost 2 full packs of Taipan 215gn RNs sitting here in my cupboard with no moose in well over 5000 miles and not even a 303 in my possession. :(
Damn those export permits!

hornady RN's are easy to come by and from what i've seen, preform very well and the swamp donkey. 174gr is more then enough for a moose :D

303/25 is shelved for now, money needed elseware (back to being a student). it's only a barrel short though, so not much more to finish it....

Fair enough.....you've taken plenty more moose than me, me having taken a great big ZERO!
It's good to hear the 303/25 still on the way.
I was beginning to worry that it had stalled and been dropped.
If you want something to help form brass when the time comes I can get you a 303/270 FL vice die that'll give you a step between .311 cal & .257 cal and maybe save you some brass.
They're only about AUD$32 and I picked one up.
Think about it when the time comes.
But I'll stop hijacking this laudable thread. ;)

they seem to form just fine in one step through the dies you aquired for me. debating sellign my .22-250, if i do I'll use those funds to finnish my imperial quarterbore ;)

Moose aren't particularly hard to kill... any good factory .303 load thru the right spot will do the trick... magic bullets not required... ;)

Or hand loads, just shoot enough to get the right load for your rifle!

The 180g remington Round nose has a fairly thick jacket. I have never shot anything with it. I did test it and expansion usualay stops at the canalure. It would be my choice to try on moose.

220 grain Win. silvertip

For all you folks that miss the old 215 grain Dominion loads you might try the heavies in .308 caliber.

Have a scoped #4 Longbranch .303 and a scoped 1912 Martini .303 with a new "used" Longbranch barrel on it now and nothing in .303 over 180 grains. Had a box of old Winchester 220 gr. Silvertips in .308 caliber and the old Lyman manual gave an "accuracy load" of 43 grains IMR4350 with a 215 grain in .312. Loaded up some with the 220 grain Silvertips and went to the range.

43.0 gr Imr4350....220gr silvertip..2036..2021..2012 fps 3 shots/75 yds/ 0.538 inch. with the #4 and just over an inch in the Martini.

Had similar results with 180 Sierra spz in .308 with Reloder 15 and with 125 Bal. tips .308 useing H335.

I understand that the Silvertips are maybe hard to find but several bullet makers make 220 gr. round nose in .308 and if you already have some in .308 give it a try, it may shoot just as good in your .303.

hs45/70....your mileage may vary

Exactly right! For many years in northern Canada more moose were shot with the 30-30 than any other calibre and the modern moose are not any tougher to kill.

Guys, if you really LOVE 215gn bullets harrass your Woodleigh distributor into importing some for you.
Believe me, while they may be a little expensive they are the ducks guts!
Either that or email Malcolm Bone of Taipan Bullets at bullets@tpg.com.au and get him to send you a stack from the next production run.
He sends them to New Zealand so a bulk order to Canada shouldn't be any harder.
Of course you could always try Steve Redgewells 200gn(?) spitzer which I think he calls the MkVIII.

Hornady 174gr RN's pushed to 2400fps

hey that what I use, the old 303 is bubba, truck gun only.

hey Kombi 5000 miles to a moose might not be totally correct, they introduced moose about 50 years ago in NZ and they run into them from time to time.
