Best 405 grain GC mold for 45-70

I havn't used all the molds out there but after dealing with lyman, rcbs and lee I bought several of the higher capacity aluminum NOE molds. I will not be buying anything else. They make options for brass or aluminum, single to 5 cavity , hollow point or not or a little of both in the same mold, flat base or gas check all for a price that can't be touched by the other premium makers.

Have used both NOE mold powder coated gas checked and plain based projectiles up to max velocities and have to admit that I don't think a gas check is necessary. I have not noticed a accuracy difference or leading with just plain base.

My vote is for Accurate Molds with NOE almost as good.
I haven't tried Boomer in Sask, but have heard only good things about them.
Accurate gives you exactly what you order and my last order took 13 days from ordering to delivery in my mail box.

NOE make good molds but I have bought several from Leo at Boomers. Id have to say molds made for 45/70 are his specialty. He builds lots for those in the BPCR game. He is good to talk to about different designs too.

This is my current NOE.
405 grains flat nose when used with no pin but comes with shallow hollow point and deep hollowpoint pins

Plain base and I powder coat.

Have not put them over a crony yet. Just started with 45-70 in the spring and have not had much time with it yet.

So far no leading, checked my notes...should be around 1550fps

Have you tried others in the 46-405 series of these molds? For example the 46-405VG? Seems to have a slightly wider meplat (Jae Bok style? ) and I can't help but wonder if it would add some extra smack down?

.33 is plenty smack and going wider can cause feeding issues in some tube fed rifles.

I hadn't considered that, as it's mostly for a single shot Handi although would use in a 458 Win mag bolt action too.
Bigger meplat should work in those.

Using 45-70 bullets in the 458winmag I had best results seating the bullet out further, with one or more lube groove outside the case. Otherwise the bullet jump is about half an inch of freebore before it gets to the rifling which doesn't make for accuracy. .

I often seat them out as you've described. The freebore on these things is insane!
