Which manufacturer makes the best .410 shottie out there? Recent or older...give your opinion if you've experienced a variety of them, please...

Best? There are some magnificent British and European doubles. Some pretty nice American ones, too.
The Wincheter 42 is worth considering, as is the more recent Browning Japanese made clone.
Remington's and Mossberg's pumps are useful. As are Cooey and other singles. You can have fun with the bolt actions.

WIn model 42 if you like pumps
Remington model 11-48 for a nice domestic older semi
Merkle use to make a beautiful SXS model 360 in 410cal!
Savage/Stevens model 311 a great econmical 410 SXS

As you can see I like older production 410's and my whole family pretty much hunts partridge with this gauge! I sure did alot of reloading for the past fall season! My father uses an imported Spanish O/U brought in by Safari arms, great little gun, the nephew uses my wifes Remington 812 singleshot, I use my Lefever arms 410 SXS that is light as a feather, sweet gun!
If I was to order a new gun for around $3-5K I would look at the Merkles SXS and O/U's
or an AYA SXS, they look real nice to carry all day long, very wispy!
If I were to get a pump, I would have to order Remington Wing Master from the Custom Shop, as this is the only way to get a quality 870 from Remington anymore!
And for a new semi I would get a Remington field grade model 1100 with solid rib and 3" chamber.
This is just my point of view, I also hunt with my lever Winnie once in a blue moon, I would like to find an original Marlin 93 in 410, now there is quality!cheers dale Z!

Spend maybe up to $500. The type of action isn't that important (to me); unless you guys think I ought to stay away from one particular type!

If the $500 is a hard limit then the Remington Express would be the best choice. If there is more flexibility the extra $100 to acquire a Browning BPS would be money well spent.

El Faison SxS! They are the best! They can fold into 2 when they break open and can EASILY fit inside of a backpack for transportation. Mine has 3" chambers and Full/Full choke. Exposed hammers and double trigger. I got mine for free but I have seen them at the local gun shop for $400-600 in MINT condition.
