Best 7.62x39: CZ 858 vs. XCR

Hello Forum,
is NOT my intention tostart a flame war, I'm seeking for experiences and advice.
I do have a 858, and sinceI got it I invested 1500 $ (without optic) to transform it to amodern gun.

It features every after market possible enhancement.
So at the end the pricefor a modern CZ is around 2400 + taxes
I'm considering to get asecond one because is more logic to stick to a platform.Nevertheless I'm fascinated by the XCR: it looks cool! The myth says:

  • perfect ergonomic
  • monolithic rail out of the box
  • FAST stock
  • Very reliable
  • can change ammos
  • ...
the critic says:

  • expensive
  • proprietary design depending from small company
  • few exemplars
  • not reliable at all
  • never proved in real battle
  • heavy
  • ...
Unfortunately I don't havethe chance to try the XCR before I buy so I need your advice.
So you decide. who is thebest 7.62x39: the CZ 858 or the XCR L?
 
I'd be turned off by the weight and reliability issues.. You already have a dead-reliable rifle in 7.62x39 and you put a lot of work into improving her functionality. I'd go for a new experience instead.

Edit: Just some notes.. I've never owned an 858 but I only hear good things about it. I had fun shooting an XCR in .308 off the bench, but I wouldn't have had much fun shooting it offhand or crashin' bush. It was quite heavy. I haven't experienced any failures but I only fired a few rounds.
 
I've got both. They each have their place.

My XCR has been as reliable as my VZs. The two major problems with the XCR are cost and weight. If we could get a light profile 7.62x39 barrel the weight would be less of an issue but the cost won't ever change. It's far easier to scope the XCR and the 10 round pistol mags and superior ergonomics are big benefits.

I rarely shoot my CSA these days.

 
I've fired both and personally find the xcr a absolutely incredible x39 platform especially. Reliability issues? I have seen some that only relate to over worn parts. always goes bang and u can run thousands of rounds of whatever x39 u want with no cleaning if u so choose with no issues. Very low maintenance, and super easy to maintain and disassemble when you choose to. Only issues I've seen with it fall back to minor wear issues that require a cheap replacement.
Lots of options with the xcr. Can keep it light if that's ur thing, or if ur too weak to carry a xcr in the bush lol. ( I find It quite pleasing and I am in no way a big guy so weight complaints seem to relate to the shape ur in or people sticking a new cars worth of accessories on it)
Or you can load it out with a good optic and a bipod or something for a stable platform. Rails being integrated gives you lots of options.

Ergonomics are amazing feeling on the rifle. I quite like the hogue grips on the xcr's I have now as well.

If u don't like the fast stock, though most xcr owners do, u can easily buy a xcr AR stock adapter and put w/e u want on it.

I'm not all fanboy of the xcr though. I don't like the platform nearly as much in any other calibr than x39, an don't find .223 specifically to perform as well as x39 in the xcr. But this is of course my experience and opinion. I also find out of the box the xcr left space for desire to upgrade and balance better, but again that's a matter of preference.

If you ask me.. Xcr all day.

To expand on my previous comments: There is no "best" between the two choices. There are enough differences between the two that your intended use will determine which might be "better" in a given circumstance or task.
 
Define "modern" gun.

AK47 of 1947 design is widely used and still regarded as modern.
AR15 of 1957 design is widely used and still regarded as modern.

The vz58 is of 1958 design and is newer than both.

The XCR has an action likened to the AK47 and body of an AR15 type.

Just two different fish.
 
Vz for life!!

Hands on experience of "ross rifle" moments with an XCR in 7.62x39 tainted them in my eyes.

If we're talking bone stock: yeah the Vz is pretty plain. But when you start building . . .

cz 858 is more reliable ,more manageable, cheapest, it ' s not a weekend firearm.

before buying a xcr , i will look at swiss arms for sure....this is the real thing , nothing come close....
 
I feel much better now, was on the fence of this exact issue but now I'm rock solid cz. Proven, inexpensive and very customizable. More and more coming out every week it seems like.
 
I have a newer XCR, ACR, Tavor and in my opinion the CZ doesn't compare to any of them. If it were TRULY an AK-type rifle (which it is not or it would be prohibited), I would say the reliability of the CZ should be better due to the design of the AK. However, it is not. It's a slightly better quality SKS, and as the OP seems to enjoy putting a large amount of money on accessories and upgrades, why not buy an SKS and upgrade the hell out of that? You'd have the same end result. My XCR has seen thousands of rounds and I have never had a hiccup. It doesn't need a lot of cleaning, and with decent ammo and a custom barrel it shoots great, not to mention having multiple calibers. The only caveat so far is a chewed up buffer, and the weight issue is easily solved by throwing a Magpul UBR onto there. It has much better ergonomics and the fact it takes those AR type mags is a godsend. Nothing more annoying than trying to change those AK-type banana mags on the CZ.
 
I just bought myself an CSA VZ 58 sporter with M4 stock today, only reason I bought is because it's share the same round as my SKS. If they do make TAVOR in 7.62, I will buy another than CSA but too bad, there is none.
