You don't need to match the attacker, you can use whatever force is reasonable if your intent was not to kill or cause grievous bodily harm.
Unfortunatley for vancity, if he were to defend himself and his family tonight using some of the ammo he inquired about in this thread, and the cops or prosecutors find this conversation, they will try to prove that his intent was to kill or cause BGH, they might even try and say it was premeditated (ok, me being paranoid but you never know). In any case depending on circumstances, they might have a good chance of conviction.
If on the other hand, he were to defend himself and his family using the ammo that he uses regularly when practicing at the range, its a lot easier to say there was no intent to kill etc...
My .02$, buy lots of cheap ball ammo and shoot a lot.
You are completely and utterly wrong! If I may quote section 34 of the Criminal Code of Canada:
Defence of Person
Self-defence against unprovoked assault
34. (1) Every one who is unlawfully assaulted without having provoked the assault is justified in repelling force by force if the force he uses is not intended to cause death or grievous bodily harm and is no more than is necessary to enable him to defend himself.
Extent of justification
(2) Every one who is unlawfully assaulted and who causes death or grievous bodily harm in repelling the assault is justified if
(a) he causes it under reasonable apprehension of death or grievous bodily harm from the violence with which the assault was originally made or with which the assailant pursues his purposes; and
(b) he believes, on reasonable grounds, that he cannot otherwise preserve himself from death or grievous bodily harm.

Flying ashtrays ( Hollow Points ) .
Iv'e hand loaded different types of hollow points & find speers work the best in my testings. Remember shot placements should be # 1 , then the ammo your using. If your a skilled shooter i'd aim for head shots first, then the neck shots second, groin shots third, body mass shots forth.

You're right, the potential for issues in court are very real. So is the possibility of dying in your home as a law abiding citizen. I'm sure you would receive the order of Canada for refraining from using a firearm against an intruder.
The other side of the argument has been pointed out by Manboy and others.
TDC
recommending ball ammunition for self defense is like coaching a MLB player to use a plastic tee-ball bat.
...its home defence we are talking about here. Pistol is impractical. You have it double locked and unloaded. How fast can you bring it to bear on an intruder?
If you are serious about home defence you would be thinking shotgun.
Beep, beep, beep... Click, ka-chunk.
And you're good to go.
If you are serious about home defence you would be thinking electronic-access safe.
Well vancity is no cop and cant CCW, so its home defence we are talking about here. Pistol is impractical. You have it double locked and unloaded. How fast can you bring it to bear on an intruder?

The 9mm is a pussy round. If you want a proven stopper it's .45ACP all the way.![]()

Why would you have it double locked? This is mis-information. If it's in a safe, it's not a legal requirement to be trigger locked as well. IN A SAFE IT ONLY HAS TO BE UNLOADED. (This doesn't have to be time consuming, depending on where your safe is of course)
