My understanding is that the only practical reason for a .17 HMR cartridge is greater precision when shooting past 150 yards. Therefore, I have deduced that it is illogical to chamber it in anything other than a bolt action rifle. Am I wrong?

That and the "Spatter Factor". When you hit a gopher center mass anywhere in the cartridge's effective range the terminals can be quite... Spectacular.

He's not taking a gutshot and running back down his hole.

I just ordered a single shot 17, it's a break down with a hammer and scope mounts, the price was right, anyone see or try one of these? NEF Sportster 17 Magnum Rimfire Single Shot Rifle

Yup...that's why I'm bias towards a single shot break action.. :D

My savage bolt action repeater was the bomb at 200 yards with not much wind. 5 shots in a loonie and I was getter better. The gun is capable of better than that though. At 100 yards all five shots usually were touching. Single shot is usually more accurate but that bolt action with light trigger was a dream.
