All,

I am hunting in an area where I am pushing deer from 10m away to about 60m away - often when I am upland hunting. I was thinking of hunting in this area with my shotgun for deer. I have never killed deer with a shotgun but today I bought a number of different 00 buck/slugs to start patterning my shotgun before the fall. I am wondering if I should spring for an after market choke and if so, what would you recommend?

I will use imp cyl with buckshot/slug which also allows me to take some upland game if the hunt is slow.

Thanks for your opinions. FYI I am using a different Winchester sxp 12 g 28" barrel waterfowl edition.

If you are looking to improve over factory flush-fitting chokes, consider trying some extended chokes, like the TruLock Extended IC offerings. I'm not a fan of the ported models they also offer, but YMMV.

The extended chokes have a longer parallel section at the constriction, which is generally thought to throw more consistent patterns.

To replace OEM flush chokes, I usually buy Carlson's copies of OEM offerings. Cheaper, but just as good as OEM.

Thanks. I am looking for extended tubes for easy swap out in the field. I'll check those out.

That was my thought too. Conventional wisdom says numbered buck goes through and I/c of mid. Choke at most, but I have seen lots of these full constrictions for deer and coyote. I definitely wouldn't want to put a slug through a tight choke.

FYI, it's important to pattern the load because buckshot and slugs sometimes shoot better out of some shotguns with modified chokes installed. Almost always best with either IC or M chokes...you just have to compare.

Well - As far as slugs are concerned, my own experience has shown that some rifled slugs consistently shoot better than other brands, regardless of choke size, shotgun type etc. For "up close and personal " deer hunting such as dogging, my choice was to have a slug in the chamber and buckshot in the mag tube. I was shooting a short barrelled fixed choke (cylinder bore) 870 for most of my hunts. FWIW - Rifled slugs can pass through a full choke without issues, so you can pattern your shotgun to give best results with buckshot, and use the "best of " slugs as a matter of habit.
