what are the thoughts on savage arms?

I know the initial post was very vague, but I'd also like to hear some names of what to look into.

Savage makes a good product. Not as fancy or refined in most cases but does the job sometimes better then anything else.

First, identify your game. Then, find the foot pounds needed for a clean kill at your longest shot (pie plate size). Then you have your cartridge (grains and calibre). Next, find the bolt action the shoots that cartridge. Plan to spend about half or close to equal price on optics.

Lots of good names are already mentioned. Savage has a good name and good price, also Browning hasn't been mentioned.

The best rifle is the one that fits you the best. Shoulder lots of different rifles at a gun store to see what you like. Sometimes what will work the best may not be in the budget, but will be superior in the long run.

As for caliber, that depends on what you want to do with it. Any 30 cal is very versatile (308, 30/06 300WM, 300WSM), but if your like me you won't own one because it's hard to convince the wife to buy more firearms
