Best "All Around Bullet" for 7mm-08

Deer aren't all that hard to kill, so I'd use either the 139 or 154gr Hornady (or similar).

Partitions or TSX might be better for bigger game.

.

I would be betting on the Partition, due to the fact that its front section has a relatively thin jacket, and tends to open readily, even at somewhat lower velocities. Eagleye.

Barnes claims about 1800fps as a minimum expansion velocity on most of the TTSX line. Some individual bullets are down to 1600fps, but it totally depends on the particular bullet you're thinking of.

Partitions are also rated at 1800fps by Nosler.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other, as far as long-range expansion goes.

My 7mm-08 has taken 2 moose this season using 140gr TSX. One moose made 3 steps fell over and the other dropped right on the spot, excellent performance and a great all around bullet I would think.

What was the distance on those shots?

First moose(mine) was about 250 yards the second moose which my uncle shot with my rifle was about 50 yards.

Heres the 140 TSX I recovered from my Moose after going threw both shoulders, it was sticking out of the hide on the opposite side

7mm 08

STONED a 4 1/2 year old Bull w.Federal premium 140g Nosler Partition 200yds double lung and heart. Stumbled 3 paces and down she went. NOW!!!! that doesn't mean that it is the best Mooser. (My opinion) shot placement is about the ALL and end all regardless of what you hit them with. I am a belted magnum fan for Bullwinkle NOT because I need the power, but I want the flat traj. out to 300 with enough knockdown to do it right????? For what it's worth. I LOVE the 7mm 08 on deer!!! 120gr. again Nosler Partition But hard to find in factory , and I don't handload. Why everyone insists on selling the 140gr for whitetail is beyond my understanding. I "still " hunt and bow hunt so I NEVER take an "iffy" shot. I prefer the faster MV and flatter traj. for longer well placed shots.

GHH

If it were me with a 7-08, I'd buy many boxes of Horn 139gn SP in flat base, I've always got better accuracy with flat base, I'd shoot a lot & take any game I went after... unless I went for moose, then I'd use Horn 150SP. Can you tell I like Interlocks!

I'm not a big ammo and reloading guy, but I wouldn't use anything less then 180 gr. for a moose... you may not always have tht perfect shot and I've heard of even heavier bullets no doing damage if moose skin is out of water and tougher when wet...etc...

I'd go with high weight with deep penetration bullet design....that you can get out of a 7mm-08

At one time, I would have agreed with you, when all we had were Rem. Core-Lokt, or Win Super-X, but with the fantastic bullets they have today, I wouldn't be one bit afraid of using my 6.5X55 (and yes, I know that they are a favourite moose cartridge in Scandinavia, but I wouldn't try it without a premium bullet), a 7mm Mauser or a 7mm08 on moose.

Noel, can we see a picture of the rest of that Brno 7mm? Is it a 21H or a 22F? I am in the process of acquiring a Brno 21H 7x57, it will be my first 7mm so I am enjoying this thread.

We have the winner!w:h:

My Bride used the 154gr SP on her cow moose and it didn't know what hit her.
Used it last fall on her Elk too, same outcome.

I am lagging in hand's on knowledge concerning the performance of many newer, wonder bullets from the last 20 years or so, but I'll say this,........ in it's day, a Hornady flat base, spire point, was the little known wonder bullet. Cheapest to buy, as accurate at game ranges, as any, and terminal performance was absolutely the best on deer size game and even up to moose.
I gave 2 boxes of my165gr spirepoint handloads, to a Moosehunter when I sold him a ParkerHale 1200c, and on a two tag hunt with his friend, they both bagged large, Cape Breton bull moose, with the PH 1200SC in .308Win, using my deer loads. One shot, one kill on both, they were very impressed.

I know their reliable performance on deer, but just had to add the story seeing your similar findings with the 7mm-08 on moose as well.w:h:
