Best all around hunting caliber

They way things are going methinks hunting the big five in Aftica should stop.

Not sure I catch your meaning, the .22 talk, or in general? If the hunting stops it's game over for a couple of the species if that's what you mean. Hunting is how liquid funds are made of wilds and wildlife in a lot of Africa, without the hunting value those lions will be poisoned pretty fast, and the Cape Buffalo poached out, to make room for cattle. Has happened over millions of acres already. Hunting makes a good bull worth a $15,000+ injection of good cash for Buffalo, $20,000+ for Lion, even more for Elephant, and six figures for Rhino. When the wilds and wildlife generate that much money, they're preserved and paid unbelievable attention. Look at Zimbabwe, about the only thing run correctly there is the hunting, of which the management is world class and the best PH program in the world.

If you meant .22's and dangerous game, I digress!

It was actually P.H. Capstick that wrote about shooting elephants in the heart with a .22, not Taylor, and Capstick got the story second-hand, and over drinks. It's in his book "Safari", "A Solid Suggestion" chapter. First time was a fluke of sorts, since they weren't actually trying to kill the elephant with a .22, just sting it so it would move into a better position, the second time was the subject of a bet.

I have to say I don't have a lot of time for either Capstick or Taylor, though their books are still on my shelves. Take it with a grain of salt.

You're right.... My bad.
I've been reading through so many old hunting and shooting books lately, that I goofed on the
teller of the tale. No matter though, none of this banter is really going to help the OP's
question without a little more info.

Does the OP mean all animals in North America or worldwide?
Is the OP actually intending to do overseas hunting or just curious?

I myself use the rifle that I'm most comfortable shooting, in a caliber well suited for the game intended and
at the closest practical range to ensure success. I try to get out shooting at least once a week and use
up around 100 rnds. average in centerfire, double that easy in rimfre to stay in tune.

Any rifle you pick for the task should feel like an old friend when you shoulder it, and it must be accurate
enough with the right bullet for the range and game intended. The rifle must be in proper
working order and of reliable design and proven function and fitted with sights that suit you best.

Banter done.

just due to popularity....308 or 30-06. easy to buy ammo. just depends on allot of stuff. your size, you like levers. bolts. I think 357 is my fave but i dont even own one so... such a under descriptive question, you have allot of research to do. If you dont want to do the research just buy a 30-06 er a 308. that simble buuuuuddy!
