Best all around Rifle or Shot Gun

Woodlot the .22cal is a sound suggestion as well. If I was recomending to a new shooter
1st 12 GAUGE combo gun
2nd .22 rimfire
3rd centerfire ( I would need to know where you lived to recomend... as 30cal is too much gun for south ont!)

Well, i guess I'm on the right track. I'm just starting out and my first gun was an 870 that my father in law gave me. This past summer I added a 10/22 and one of the new Savage Trophy Hunter 111 packages in 223. Perfect for sw Ontario where I live. Next summer I plan to add a 30.06, probably a BAR for when I go hunting moose with my brother in Northern Ontario. My father in law also has a semi auto 12ga that he is passing along once he gets some other stuff sorted out.

The most versatile hunting gun was invented many years ago by the Germans. It has two shotgun barrels in the standard side x side configuration, and a rifle barrel underneath. It is called a drilling ( German Drei = three) I have a couple of them. They are the ultimate! Consider this -
My Krieghoff is 16ga.x16ga. / 7x57R. The 16 ga. is often said to "carry like a 20, hit like a 12" It is choked IC and imp.mod, ( 1/4 & 3/4) which is about the most versatile choke combination for a double gun. The 7x57 is one of the smallest general purpose cartridges adequate for all hoofed game. It has an insert barrel in .22 RF Magnum that slips into the right barrel. The insert is accurate to within an inch at 50 yds and returns to zero when removed and re-installed. It has iron sights that fold away when shooting the shotgun and flip up automatically when the rifle barrel is selected. It has a 3-9 power scope in claw mounts which are instantly detatchable and return precisely to zero when clipped back on. It is light, handy, versatile, and capable of any hunting job I could ask within reason. But it is also a hand built work of art and very expensive! Sorry about that...

For reasonable money - all new:

Mossberg 500 combo - also includes rifled barrel w/sights for slugs (can use Mossberg accu-choke) - $350
Marlin 60 semi-aut 22 LR - $160
Stevens 200 in .30-06 - $300
Bushnell 3-9x40 Elite - $195 (after $75 mail in rebate)
Nikon ATB Monarch 10x56 - $459

So then you have a .22 for plinking/practice/small game; a 12g for all different types of birds and small game plus a rifled slug barrel for deer and bear; a rifle suitable for all North American big game with good optics; and a really nice set of binoculars that will serve you well even in poor light. All of that comes in under $1500 - well, just over with taxes.
