Best all around shotgun for new hunter

I think I'm leaning towards an inertia gun for my first. Easier to maintain despite the recoil.

The Franchi Affinity 3 looks like a nice one.

Good luck in your search but for future reference and to avoid bad feedback maybe don’t discuss and make an offer on a gun (which was accepted) then ghost the seller…common courtesy goes a long way

I've heard 20ga and 12ga but what are your thoughts?
What can you afford . first shotgun? I'd stick with a 12 Gauge. shells are easier to get and cheaper than 20 gauge. better variety . Mossberg 500 . Mossberg 590 . Remington 870. Browning BPS. Mossberg Maverick. it is a budget shotgun very light so more recoil ? stick with 12 gauge.

Get a Remington 870 Police Magnum while you still can. They are worth every penny. Upgrade with Mesa Tactical Picatinny Rail and side-saddle, Streamlight TL Racker lighted Forend, etc, as funds allow. The purchase of a 28" Vent-Rib Barrel and Chokes will allow you to hunt birds or shoot clays, adding to your shotgun's versatility.

It really depends what you're planning on hunting...

For chasing grouse/hare, a shorter (25"-26") double barrel is kind of nice
- It gives you the options of having two different chokes available.
- A more open choke for closer shots, and a tighter choke for longer shots

As far as gauge is concerned... 12 or 20 would do just fine, and ammo is readily available

IMHO, the Mossberg 500/535 12ga 3 barrel combo will accomplish everything you need to get started in both hunting & sport shooting. Waterfowl, deer, coyote, small game, trap, skeet, sporting clays, it will do it all. At a price point that is affordable as well.

Once you learn your favorites you can invest in more purpose specific firearms.
