My son just got his hunting apprentice license.
I am looking to get him a gun, mostly for turkey and waterfowl.
Any suggestion, best gun, best price.
I will admit I don't want to spend thousands of dollars, but I would like to get him something half decent.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

for a young fella you can't go wrong with a NEF or H&R.solid, reliable and easy on the wallet,an learnin the "1 at a time" can be a good thing!
bought my kid an H&R Tamer .410 for grouse last year.good little iron that fits kids.

Is your son a slight 14 year-old, or a 19 yr-old linebacker for the university football team? Former - a Youth model (shorter stock and barrel), latter - full sized gun.

Your most versatile gauge is 12, considering waterfowl and turkey. Any pump gun with screw-in chokes and a 3" chamber will fit the bill nicely. They're simple, rugged, easy to use, cheaper, etc. A new shooter can't take advantage of what a 3.5" chamber offers, so don't worry about it. Remington, Mossberg, Winchester, etc. will all work fine. Let him decide which one feels best to him.

I think the new remmy has lop adjustments now. So if it's a younger shooter, he can grow with the gun.

I agree. You should get him something durable and adjustable to better suit him as he gets bigger. Instead of buying a gun every so many years, he can be used to the same gun and may only have to change barrels as they wear out(depending on how often he's in the field of course). Good luck.

Bought my wife a mossberg 500 20g bantam combo for $350 and couldn't be happier. Great gun for an awesome price. Put a red dot on for turkey(comes drilled and tapped) and slugs and a limbsaver pad to eliminate the already mild recoil.

There are lots of used Remington 870 Wingmasters kicking around for reasonable prices. If need be, open up the Full choke to Modified for steel shot.

Mossberg 535 3 or 2 barrel combo. Get the waterfowl, deer combo and you will be set. can save the slug barrel til hes a bit older and wants to do some deer hunting. Probably close to the same price as well.

I would suggest looking at a new Remington 870 Express in the synthetic stocks. The laminates are ugly and the synthetic will never die. It's about the best value for a gun you can use in any weather, for any game in any season.
