hey I remember passing a bunch of those in my YJ going up eagle (in bc lowermainland) last fall hehehehe
I'm just playin. for a newer vehicle, the Toyotas are are good solid investment.
I was a dedicated big block chevy and landcruiser guy before I got the YJ.
I do miss that ol 78 BJ40 with the heavy duty running gear and 3B engine..... what a tank.
if I could convince the wife I actually needed another 4x4 , it would be a ol landcruiser diesel for sure. My buddies on the coast in Vancouver have a shop that rebuilds/restores them.

you sure it was a willy? guess it would have to be for a 55....
jeep made the CJ5 with chevy runnin gear in early 70's ;)
couldn't help myself I'm a CJ/YJ jeep nut

It will pop a wheelie if you put the tires against a speed bump and drop the clutch, it's a brute. I don't wheel anymore and it will probably get sold to re-engine my mustang, as it's a real pain to hunt from when I have a pickup at home. Just hauled my moose for this year which was 850lbs in quarters in a pickup, and couldn't imagine trying to do it with my FJ. Hunting vehicle = pickup to me.

your answer if you re about Toyota : FJ45. never killed one and we had a fleet of 5 in Africa .... plus the big gm 6x6 but that is another story ..

Best all purpose family hunting rig... Toyota FJ60. Mine is a 1987 with 190K miles on it, 5 spd, 4.11 gears, arb locker, 33" tires. It's got room for 4 and I built a shelf in the back for the dogs to ride on top - our gear goes underneath or on the roof. My hunting camp stays packed in the back year round so I'm always ready to go.

I had a built Jeep TJ before that was great off road but not enough room for gear.

yep, she was a Willys, '55 was first year for them, the original motor was replaced by the previous owner with a 235 cid in line 6 cyl.

the guys at IH8Mud seem to like the Cdn M101 to mate with cruisers. Did you acquire it with the V8 or do the conversion yourself? I have wondered whether a bulletproof build on a small block would be better than a Toyota diesel conversion for power/durability and economy ... sometimes cubic inches dont have to work as hard and delivery surprising fuel economy...Once I get the head off my series 80 1FZ-FE I have to make a decision: rebuild, replace (gas or diesel)
 
For a truly all-round (including family vehicle) body-on-frame SUV, the short-list should include a 3rd to 5th generation 4Runner.
I have a 5th gen and so far it has never let me down.
 
All I can say to all those suggesting SUVs is you must never hunt anything bigger than a deer. For those really into Canadian hunting, few would be interested in trying to put 850lbs of Moose quarters (forgetting the head!) on a roof, or worse with Bison. Even a good bull Elk wouldn't be fun on even a hitch carrier. Even fewer would want it inside, and it won't cool in there well anyhow. Hunting is pickup territory, unless hunting is a casual hobby, or you prefer small game hunting, and there's nothing wrong with that. But you're putting yourself in an awkward and unnecessary crimp selecting an SUV as a true hunting vehicle. Just get a good half ton quad cab and you're done. :)

not for me, I use a suzuki for every aspect of the hunt exept the transport home from camp, then the suzuki and animals go on the trailer behind my truck and camper or just truck if staying at my cabin. If I built a pickup to do what my suzuki can it would be a borderline useless vehicle on the street asking to be taken off the road and it would still be too big for the places I hunt
 
We likely have different views on how hunting is done, ours is 99% feet. And while I'm suspicious of your statement pickups can't go where your Suzuki will (I have the V8 FJ build a page back, very familiar with wheeling), I'll grant you that for the sake of sport. We don't drive once in hunting country, it kills the whole experience. If you want to, a quad will go much further than a Suzuki, no matter what anyone tries to tell themselves to justify what we like. In the end, you yourself state all your crap is getting hauled home by a pickup. One good pickup will easily do the whole trip, works for me and I am definitely on the "busy" end of the hunting scale. If you want throw a quad in the back of the pickup. Few want to pack so much crap to go hunting anyway, pickup, trailer for second vehicle, second vehicle, camper… that sounds like America's idea of a deer hunt. :) The fellow starting this thread wanted a hunting vehicle that worked for his real life too, and just one vehicle, not a convoy. That vehicle is a half ton quad cab, unless hunting is an infrequent side affair.

Big block power is fun and if exhausted right, sounds maaarvelous, simply marvelous.
